Text
In the first edition of The Quad, on the front page, African-American History Month was referred to as being the month of January. Obviously, neither the writer nor the editor who edited the article knew what month African-AmericanAfrican-American History Month was. This is not the first time The Quad has made mistakes concerning African-American students. As an African-American student leader on this campus, I have a commitment and responsibility to speak out when such mistakes are made. The responsibility of speaking out when mistakes are made is one that all African-American students should share. If we don't stand up for ourselves, the non-black students on the campus certainly will not. And we should not expect them to, nor should we expect African-Americans in administrative, staff or faculty positions to fight our battle. It is our battle to win or lose, but our recent response to the ignorance perpetrated by our student newspaper has displayed a laissez-faire attitude—an attitude that will do nothing but foster more ignorance. The only method to ensure that such embarrassingly ignorant mistakes do not continue is for African-American students to get involved in the production of our student newspaper; thus, we would have an opportunity to catch such mistakes before they reach the printer.
