BSU protests letter to HEW By JACK MEIGHAN Student government and the black Student Union have registered a joint protest against an anonymous petition criticizing a recent Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) directive circulating on campus. Addressed to Casper W. Weinburger Secretary of HEW and Peter E. Holmes, Director HEW Office of Civil Rights, the petition that an "act of reverse-discrimination would result if West Chester were to accede to HEW's desegregation demands. The demands would also, the petition continued, "threaten the high academic standards which West Chester has achieved and maintains." The petition further states that West Chester has never been accused of discrimination and calls for HEW to "withdraw the unfair, unjust and unwarranted demands." Cheryl Harvey, vice-chairman of the Black Student Union (BSU), brought the petition to the attention of the Intracollegiate Governmental Association (IGA) General Assembly No. 27. Harvey said that the petition had been circulating in classrooms but she had been unable to determine who was responsible for it. According to Harvey, West Chester has been cited for discrimination repeatedly. The BSU resented the insinuations implicit in the petition, she continued, and asked the IGA to "disavow the petition and make it known to the student body that the petition presents false information." Lorraine Marino, vice-president of IGA, made a motion "that the IGA register a protest against the content and spirit of this petition." After Marino assured some members that the motion in no way denied the right of an individual to petition, the motion was voted on and carried.
