Sports Rams win in finale by Gus Sortino Quad Correspondent The West Chester Golden Rams defeated Salisbury State (Md.) 23-21 Friday night at Farrell Stadium. The win gave the Rams their first winning season (5-4-1) since 1976. The Rams built an early lead in the first half, only to watch it slip away. They then had to rely on some last minute heroics to win. West Chester scored on the first possession of the evening following one of the three turnovers by Salisbury State in the first half. Ram halfback Tyrone Scott (20 carries 83 yards 2 TDs) opened the scoring in the first period on a two-yard run. Kicker Jim Zelenak added the extra point and the Rams had a 7-0 lead. Two minutes later Zelenak connected on a twenty yard field goal and the score was 10-0. The Rams' next score followed a diving interception by Don Hazen which gave West Chester possession at the Salisbury 34 yard line. Sophomore quarterback Bob Rafferty led the offense on a nine play drive that ended with Rafferty plowing over from the one to make it 16-0 at the half. In the second half West Chester's over-all dominance was quickly turned around. Salisbury State led by quarterback Anthony Bell scored twice in the third quarter. Bell connected with wide receiver Mike Hebron on scoring tosses of 22 and four yards to make the score 16-14 going into the final quarter. The Sea Gulls took the lead with just six minutes remaining to play when Bell hit receiver Jimmy Jones who broke loose and raced 80 yards for the score and put Salisbury State in front 21-16. With just under four minutes remaining the Rams marched down field for the deciding score. West Chester quarterback Ron Gay nor threw a perfect 18- yard touchdown pass to speedy wide receiver Bruce Carthon with just a minute remaining. The Rams finished the season very strongly, going unbeaten in their last four games. The Golden Rams won three and tied one, (last week against Cheyney 24- 24). Ram's Bruce Carthon (center) clears a path for halfback Tyrone Scott. The Rams ended their season last Friday night with a 23-21 win over Salisbury State
