BSU announces boycott plans Renee Guillory BSU President By CAROLYN ROESSEL Quad Editor-in-Chief Middle States The "Black Student Union (BSU) is boycotting 'I Care week'," BSU Vice- President Nate Gadsden announced last Friday. 'I Care Week' is scheduled to take place on the WCSC campus Oct. 24 through 29. According to IGA Vice President Linda Downey, 'I Care Week' is "an attempt to get rid of apathy on campus and promote better relations between the races on campus and in town." "The Black Student Union recorded a unanimous vote of no confidence in the administration in its dealing with racial problems," said Gadsden. The vote took place at a BSU meeting last Tuesday. "We feel 'I Care Week' will present the view that everything is okay at West Chester" concerning minority problems, explained Renee Guillory, president of BSU. "We have no gripe against the students," Guillory continued, "we're gearing everything toward the faculty and administration.""We're not angry with all the people planning 'I Care Week'," added Gadsden. "We're angry about the concept of 'I Care Week'." The BSU meeting at which this decision was made was a closed meeting for all black students. A white WCSC student had tried to attend, but he was asked to leave. Guillory explained that the meeting was closed "to protect the members of the student body who were bringing up certain issues dealing with discrimination." All other meetings of the BSU would be open to all students, Guillory stressed. IGA President Jerry Sweeney said that if someone was barred from attending the BSU meeting "on the basis of race, color, or creed," then the organization was in violation of IGA's Policies and Procedures. When asked if BSU was in violation of IGA's Policies and Procedures Sweeney said, "At this point that cannot absolutely be determined because no formal complaint has been lodged to IGA against the Black Student Union. If a formal complaint is lodged then IGA will take the appropriate action," he continued. "If an incident like that occurred it would not only be in violation of IGA procedures but it would also be in violation of the Commonwealth's procedures," Sweeney added.
