Description
This article describes a dispute between the BSU and the newspaper team because the BSU thought they didn't include the Union's homecoming float on purpose. They also thought the newspaper comity was being racists towards black people because they cropped out the black Homecoming Queen crowning the new Queen by only showing her arms. There was also a student arrested because copies of the Quad were discovered missing.

A West Chester student was arrested last Tuesday after two-thirds of the copies of the QUAD were discovered missing. Jonathan Grayson admitted removing the 4200 newspapers. He was arrested for stealing 350 of them, after a witness saw him throw a stack in a trash can on the second floor of the Sykes College Union building. He has been charged with criminal mischief and theft. The staff first discovered the missing papers during their regular staff meeting last Tuesday at 11 a.m. NumerousNumerous people called the office stating that there were no QUAD's in the usual campus locations. A few reporters went out in search of the papers and found some of them in trash cans in Main Hall and Sykes and found other stacks of papers under the trees behind Lawrence. Some papers were also discovered in different men's bathrooms. After the group of reporters found the misplaced papers, the Editor-in- Chief, Ellen Sands filed a complaint with campus Law Enforcement officuds.officuds.After a news article appeared in the Daily Local News about the incident, Black Student Union President, Wayne Locust called the editor of the QUAD and stated that if charges brought against Grayson are not dropped, the newspaper would "have to deal with the consequences." He also suggested that the paper not run any article about the theft. Last Tuesday, Grayson approached two QUAD staff members in front of the office in room 223 of Sykes and expressed his displeasure to the coverage of the Homecoming activities. Grayson complained that the newspaper had discriminated against the BSU by not printing a picture of their float which won first place in the Homecoming competition. He also complained about a picture which showed last year's Black queen crowning the new white queen. The picture only showed the arms of last year's Black queen. Photography Editor, Gerard BurkhartBurkhart stated the picture of the queen's crowning just happened to be taken that way and was not cropped or cut in any way. He said that the homecoming photographers did not intentionally try to cut any group out. According to Locust, Grayson's actions were not representative of the BSU but was an individual action. During a meeting with Sands Thursday afternoon, Locust said he believed Grayson reacted so strongly to the QUAD's coverage because of a builtup feeling of disenchantment with the QUAD's attitude in previous years toward Blacks and Black-related activities.Locust explained that the college's general prejudiced atmosphere may have contributed to Grayson's behavior. He also cited two other mistakes the newspaper recently made which are related to the BSU. The QUAD published an advertisement in which a typographical error appeared. Instead of "BSU" the ad read
"BSB." In an article about a Black writer who recently spoke on campus, the wrong location was listed. The editor explained that typographical errors occur regularly and that the error was not intentional. The article was not written by a reporter but was taken directly from a press release. Locust believes that the QUAD staff should be a little more sensitive in its coverage of Black sponsored or Black related activities.
