This open letter to the college community is written by members of the Department of Elementary Education in support of the new "I care" week program to improve race relations. The members of the department wished to go on record that they in fact do care and want to improve human relations in the community.

Do we really care? AN OPEN LETTER TO THE COLLEGE COMMUNITY: What does it mean to care: To show respect, and love, and warmth? To appreciate? Do we really care? How do we communicate our caring? We teach that every person is unique and every person is worthy of respect. But how do we show that we believe it? Can you see by our manner, our policies, our programs that we care about the institution, the students, the community?Certainly this is the time to examine ourselves. We think we care. We want to care more deeply. We're not unmindful of the wrongs, the hurts, the deficiencies. If there's bias and discrimination here, we try to remember that we have our greatest freedom within the academic institution — freedom to continue to work toward a more perfect acceptance of the differences already protected for us by law and our stated goals. The members of the department wish to go on record as supporting the purposes of getting rid of apathy and promoting better human relations on campus and in the community. We care!
