Desegregation The cross-registration program between West Chester and Cheyney State College got off to a slow start this semester, according to Daniel F. Sharkey of the enrollment center. The program allows West Chester students to take courses for credit toward their degrees at Cheyney which may not be offered at West Chester. Cheyney students get the same opportunity at West Chester. Presently there are two or three West Chester students each taking one course at Cheyney, according to Sharkey. Lynn Bierman is attending a "Sales and sales Management" course, and Leanne DeNenno, a course in the recreation Cross-registration program gets off to slow start program. Also Sharkey said "one guy from Cheyney" has a course at West Chester, though he didn't know his name. SHARKEY attributed the "slow start" to lack of publicity of the program in time for students to fit it into their schedules. Students were approached during preregistration, Sharkey explained, but most were reluctant to change their schedules. Sharkey said, "We hope it will fly a little higher next time." No transportation is provided now between schools, but it may be "if both schools see there is a need for it," Sharkey said. The program was one suggested by the Department of Education, as part of a state college desegregation plan. According to Filano, vice president for academic affairs at West Chester, the program was promoted in order to expand opportunities for students, and to provide a combination of experiences and new associations. FILANO said he is very much interested in exploring an in-depth exchange of students on campus. A principle example of this would be student-teaching involvement of the joint campuses. Students should first consult with their advisors as to the acceptability of the subjects to their particular majors, according to Dr. John C. Lewis, associate dean of undergraduate studies. For more information regarding this program, students may consult the administration office, room 104, and the bulletin board in Anderson Hall, Lewis advised.
