A Student for Decencys View Are you shocked? ARE YOU SHOCKED BY THE ELEMENT THAT IS TAKING OVER U.S. COLLEGE & HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUSES? DO YOU WANT TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THESE SCENES??? Meeting of SCD (Students for Campus/Common Decency) THURSDAY, MAY 1, 1969 - 7:00 P.M. At Church St. Entrance to Ehinger Gym BE CONCERNED BTphotoby Bill McAdoo Stu Nathan, Rod Weston, Brian Cawley, Tom Hughes, Larry D'Antonio at confrontation at Ehringe'r. By MATHEW CUSTER The above was the message sprawled across a mimeographed handbill which was circulated last week, sometime before the black student "splinter-group" presented their demands to the college administration. Evidently, the atmosphere around West Chester, with the advent of a chapter of SDS (Students for Democratic Society) and the progress of SAC (Student Activist Committee), was forboding enough for some students to become "concerned" about the effects of activism. The "meeting" in front of Ehrlinger gym (misspelled on the handbill), was decidedly, and purposely, unlike the "sit-in" or other pressure tactics used by the other activist groups. The meeting was orderly, with no true "heckling" from the small crowd that turned out. But the content of what was said bore all the earmarks of the common activist sit-in: its purpose was vaguely explained, and it advocated potential , violence. Interesting theme there-fight fire with fire. Stu Nathan, the spokesman of SCD, opened his meeting by saying, "We're not really anti-anything, here." But in the course of his talk, he did seem to be against a certain "undesirable element" which was threatening this campus. He advocated the formation of a movement which would eliminate these people from the campus. He even suggested that the students here consolidate their forces to force students out of buildings occupied during a disturbance --if such an event took place. Larry D'Antonio, President of IGA, was present at the meeting. He suggested to Nathan that he leave the security of the campus up to the legally delegated forces in the form of the local and campus police. In the event of a serious confrontation, the legal authorities would not be able to distinguish the demonstrator from the anti-demonstrator. Dr. William P. Houpt, Director of Public Relations at W.C.S.C., stated that if there were any activist take-over here, an injunction would be issued immediately and the disrupters would be removed. He also stated that "their (the disrupters) days as students of West Chester State would be over. Interestingly enough, when Nathan was asked what form of action he would take in the event of a take-over, he admitted that he really didn't know. When this reporter returned to his dorm after the meeting, the general attitude of the students was one of nervousness. There were suggestions ranging from "I'm going home and getting my gun" to "We've gotta keep them out of there." But Stu Nathan admitted that he didn't really know what he would have his SDC do In a situation of violent takeover. We don't know what we can do either. But the police - the legally delegated authorities - do know what to do. It's their job.
