Black Arts festival planned by College Union The Black Culture Committee of the College Union and the Black Student Union are currently planning a Black Arts Festival to take place during the four weekends of Apr. 1972, which will feature, among others, such celebrites as Dick Gregory and Cannonball Adderly. Dick Gregory, well-know comedian and civil rights advocate, will begin the festival on Apr. 6, 1972, with a lecture. Other celebrities to be on campus during the festival include Cannonball Adderly, who will not only perform with his jazz group, but will also participate in a seminar and lecture. Poet Joanna ft******.***************** Featerstone will also take part in the festival. Contemporary Play To round out the month of April, there will be soul dances, blues coffeehouses, jazz coffeehouses, African art, and African drums. There is also a possibility that a contemporary play concerning black-white relations will be performed sometime during the month. According to Larry Dowdy, chairman of the Black Culture Committee, the festival is to create a relevant black atmosphere on the West Chester campus". The four weekends will be programmed with black music, poetry, dance theater, and lectures. Enthusiastic The College Union activities Board is enthusiastic about the festival. Mr. Kenneth Burda. Director of the College Union, stated "The festival will be outstanding. I think it will also be the best in the country." George Lutrell, vice-chairman of the College Union Activities Board, felt that it serves a twofold purpose. "When black students come here and go to the first dance, they feel turned off by the whiteness of it. This festival will give them something to identify with. It's also good for the white community.. They can really learn a lot about the Black Culture from it." The Black Arts Festival is planned to be a yearly affair. Dowdy stated, "It'll get bigger and bigger every year." Other Events The Black Student Union and the Black Culture Committee are also planning events for the rest of the academic year. Black Culture forums, which will deal with Black art, poetry, Panthers, and Muslims, and Black Film Festivals designed to enlighten black people about themselves will be occurring on a monthly basis. The committee will also sponsor a lecture series with such people as James Farmer, who is the Assistant Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, Carl Rowan, who is Editor-at-Large for the U.S. Information Service, and the Honorable C. Dolores Tucker, who is a Black Cabinet member of Governor Shapp.
