Rossey voices disgust By JOHN P. ZAIMES A peaceful calm swept over the West Chester campus Thursday night; there were no marches, no fights, no riots, no trouble. There was only one meeting. Approximately 100 black students, with Black Student Union President Larry Dowdy as their spokesman, calmly entered Lawrence Center dining room at 8:30 p.m. to hear college President Paul W. Rossey, Dr. Edward N. Norris, president of the faculty senate, and Robert McLaughlin, student government president, voice their reactions to Wednesday's early morning cross burning on the field behind Sanderson Hall. Rossey stated his disgust with the "despicable and atrocious act" but stressed that it was executed "by only five or six persons, and should not be taken to represent the feelings of the more than 6,000 students" on this campus. "We are doing everything in our power to apprehend the people behind this cross burning. The state police are investigating to the fullest." Norris said he had received many calls from concerned faculty members asking what they could do to help. He offered to help in any way he or the faculty could. McLaughlin noted that the IGA had planned, at their general assembly meeting last week, to hold a special meeting last Sunday night to attempt to find solutions to ease the racial tensions on campus. He also said he would work "in any way we can" to help. When McLaughlin finished, Dowdy stated that "we have no further questions at this time." Fifteen.minutes after they came, the group rose together and left. Friday, Dowdy commented that the three leaders "reacted as expected."
