Quad Angles Vol. 39, No. 16 West Chester State College Tuesday, February 16,1971 Student leaders confront Rossey at meeting Twelve student leaders questioned President Rossey last Thursday night concerning current problems and controversial issues on campus. One of the first questions asked was whether or not the President thought it unwise to schedule a dance immediately after the Cheyney-West Chester basketball game last February 6 when racial tensions were known to exist. Dr. Rossey replied that although the incident was an unfortunate one, it was not unwise to schedule a social event at that time. He stated security precautions were taken in lieu of such an occurrence. However, concerning the Chambers' Brothers last October 31, the President feels that outside aggravators were to blame. College Closing Unlikely As the meeting continued, a question arose concerning a tuition increase and a possibility of the State closing the college for lack of funds. Dr. Rossey stated he had received no information to this effect and that to his knowledge no confirmed threat of this type existed. He also stressed that the college would not close unless the state were to go bankrupt and that this was unlikely.. The President cited that closing the college would be an unsound political move. Longer Hours The length 'of visiting hours in the dormitories was another question posed to Dr. Rossey. Several student leaders requested longer hours to which the president replied that he is in no position to make any decision. He did say that he felt that more visiting hours (i.e. daily visitation) would be a strain on those wishing to relax in the dorms. More hours, he stated, would infringe upon their privacy. Another question raised was concerning the abolition of reading day. President Rossey contended that the day is rarely used for the purpose intended, and therefore, is a wasted day on the school calendar. This point was argued by several student leaders, and a plea was made for more than one reading day. Bookstore Problems The price of books sold in the bookstore was brought up. The hardback texts were marked up 20% by IGA; however, little of this results in profit, since the extra cash is used for freighting books back to the publishers and for salaries for bookstore employees. A suggestion was made that professors post a list of books necessary for each course before the start of a semester. This would reduce the rush on the bookstore during the first few days of a new semester. It was also requested that in the future a schedule for final exams be posted at the beginning of a semester when course selections are being made in order to avoid having several major exams on the same day. More Library Hours? President Rossey was also asked if he thought there could be an extension of library hours. The proposed extension would be in effect until midnight on weekdays and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The circulation desk would still close at the time now in effect, but facilities would be used for study purposes. Dr. Rossey agrees that the college should make studying more convenient, but said that since extra hours would require an extra staff, acceptance of the suggested hours would be improbable.
