<text>Dr. Kay: "Law and order" The black dilemma and its reflection in the work of contemporary black authors was the subject of a coffee hour discussion sponsored by English Club in the faculty dining room of Lawrence Center, Thursday, Oct. 31. Dr. Kay, whose present course in black history has set an academic standard for further campus involvement in this crucial social question, spoke of blacks as a colonized people subjugated by their colonial masters -the white population. Slogan of "law and order" The present campaign slogan of "law and order" he regarded as a presentiment of the violent could mean violent repression repression of the black power movement, of those things which would deny the white power structure. Black power, spurned from "exploitation, alienation, and rejection," offers the only remedy for the black man's plight; it is only in separation that the black man can achieve self-awareness. Dr. Kay envisioned the end of white involvement in black problems. It will be up to the black man to work out his identity crisis; the duty of the white man will lie in providing an economic environment conducive to lessening the agony of this process. Mr. Mathews After Dr. Kay's impassioned, eloquent presentation, Mr. Mathews of the English department presented his interpretation of various black literary works. He likened the troubled Bigger Thomas of Richard Wright's NATIVE SON to the martyred Malcolm X, although the latter, through his distinctive presonality and leadership traits, effectively combatted his repressive environment to emerge as a "Jeremiah" of the black movement. Malcolm X, Mathews felt, was a man who rejected the declimitive society about him and set up an order of his own. Mr. Mathews further cited IMAGES OF THE NEGRO IN AMERICAN LITERATURE by Gross and Hardy and Ralph Ellison's essay "Harlem is Nowhere" as seminal works in the understanding of the black contribution to American letters. Question-answer period A question-and-answer period followed in which Dr. Kay urged that future educators immerse themselves in the black dilemma in order to cope effectively with the classroom experience and to Dr. Kay and Dr. Mathews fulfill their roles as teachers of the youth. The next meeting will center around Mary Godwin, celebrated Shakespearean actress, who will be visiting the campus November 14.</text>

<text>Moratorium unites students for peace By NANCY J. HOLT A small portion of the Oct. 15 « Vietnam Moratorium was held here C at the college with moderate 1 student and faculty support. ] Readings of the war dead, a march, ' and auditorium discussions were ' the highlights of the day due to an i all-out group effort on the part of ' the Student Activist Committee. ' (SAC). ; The readings commenced in the Quad at 10 a.m. with an estimated 50 students present. Readers consisted mostly of SAC members, but anyone who wanted to take part was welcomed. Soon amplifiers were brought; candles were lit; black armbands were given out. Petition Circulated While the litany of the dead was being read in the Quad, a petition was circulated through the crowd to be signed by those opposing the | war. The petition was sponsor- ; ed by SANE, Citizens' Organiza- | tion for a Sane World. The op- I ening statement of the petition read: "Mr. President, the United States must end its involvement in Vietnam now. Only in this way can our government turn from the pur- ' suit of the most disastrous policy in its history." The readings in the Quad continued, and the crowd swelled until a little before twelve, when the march began to take shape. Approximately 350 marchers left the Quad at noon, headed for the courthouse. Preceded by a West Chester police escort and a hearse, the protestors chanted "All we are saying is give peace a chance." Litany Commences Reaching the courthouse, the marchers congregated on the sidewalk; their leaders In front of a statue bearing the inscription "Old Glory." Jim Kearney, member of SAC, then stood before the group saying, "We are all gathered here to bring the boys home." The litany of the dead, according to the HOUSE CONGRESSIONAL RECORD, then commenced. Faculty Present Among faculty members presentpresent at the courthouse were Terry Guidettl and Dr. Arthur Parris, both of the music department Dr. Parris spoke for himself and Guidetti when he said, "I wholeheartedly support the moratorilm.v» Two members of the faculty who were not in favor of the proceedings stood across the street from the courthouse. William Rampon of the geography department stated, "It's beautiful. The whole thing is being ignored just as it should be." Dr. Dusan Glumac of the foreign language department commented, "They're communists; I know them." William Rahn of the education department, Dr. Michael Kay of the history department, and Dr. Madelyn Gutwlrth of the foreign language department all particij pated in the reading of the dead at the courthouse. Dr. Jane Swan J read in the Quad ofter the march. I Flag Not Lowered At approximately 12:30,tenminutes after the marchers reached their destination, Mark Anderson of SAC attempted to lower the courthouse flag to half-mast. Two men, identified as veterans, raced over to him; saying, "You have no right to lower my flag." A marcher then corrected him, saying "our flag." Anderson then went into the courthouse seeking permission to lower the flag. He was not granted this permission. Spectators Comment Barricades were placed around the protestors a few minutes later to keep the crowd in the vicinity of the statue. Townspeople stood across the street and watched. One man commented that he was present just out of curiosity. A veteran said, "It would be an enlightening experience for some of these people to be in Vietnam." Evidently, he was unaware that there were some 20 veterans who participated in the ceremonies. Some spectators asked this reporter the purpose of the moratori - um. one policeman, while trying to keep the crowd In the vicinity of the statue before the barricades arrived, commented, "It's their thing." Discussions Begun While the reading of the dead was going on in the Quad and at the courthouse, C. Ralph Verno of the mathematics department started the auditorium discussions in Philips at 10 a.m. In a very forceful tone, he stated that the biggest threat of the United States is from within. Toward the conclusion of his talk, he suggested, "Let's (U.S.) be number one in honesty, integrity, and character." Both comments drew applause from the half-filled auditorium. At 11 a.m., Mitch Crane, former regional director of SDS, Dr. Kay, and Dr. Robert Weiss of the English department took over the podium. Dr. Kay analyzed the presence of the United States in Vietnam in the terms of the views and intentions of the military, corporate enterprises, federal executives, South Vietnamese government, and Americal liberalism. Dr. Weiss gave a historical analysis of the war. Burton Present Bryn Hammerstrum of the National Liberation Front spoke at noon, and William Burns, Wayne Burton, David Eldredge, James Milne, and John Shea, all of the political science department talked at 1 p.m. Hammerstrum spoke again at two, and a member of the audience from Panama commented on the freedom of speech in the United States. Daniel Civitello, Jr., President of the Philosophy Club, spoke at approximately 3 p. m. He said that he doesn't think that the United States is going to win anything in Vietnam. Civitello also stated that "there's no reason in hell why we're in Vietnam." Dr. Thomas Platt of the Philosophy department and William Rahn of the education department p spoke between 4 and 5 p.m.</text>

<text>Pigskin Preview by Bill Harvey As I watched the Rams go through their paces in preparation for their opening game against East Carolina State on September 19, it becomes apparent why West Chester is once again favored to repeat as champions of the State College Conference. The Rams seem to have: found just the right recipe for winning football games. They blend a potent offense with a sharp defense, and throw in a goodly amount of team spirit to spice the mixture. West Chester's great quarterback Terry Eberly is the man who keeps the offense moving. His credentials show 81 passes completed, good for 993 yards and 12 TD's last season. John Gerney and Clayton Burchill fill the halfback slots, while John Florence mans the fullback position. The offense uses a T-offense •with split ends, flankers and men-in-motion. The defense works off a sixman line with variations, and is keyed around linebacker Bill lacone and Jim Holt, who is also second string quarterback. Coach Jim Bonder's athletes compiled a record of eight vie-1 tories and one loss last season. The Dunkel rating system ranked the team third in the state last year behind Pittsburgh and Penn State. West Chester received 70.1 quality points out of a possible 110.1 and were rated ahead of such schools as Villanova, Temple, Rutgers, Columbia, Brown and Cornell. Following East Carolina, the Rams face, on successive weekends, East Stroudsiburg, Millersville, Bloomsburg, Ithaca, Kutztown, Mansfield and Cheyney. The Purple and Gold banner will again fly high over tha gridiron.</text>

<text> Confrontation theme of second IGA forum The second of a series of IGA forums was held on Thursday, Nov. 6, In Lawrence center Commuter Lounge. The topic discussed was "Confrontation As A Political Device During The sixties." Members of the panel were Bob McLaughlin, Dr. Michael Kay, Harry Berger, and John shea. Bill Kielbaugh was the moderator. McLaughlin started the discussion by stating that there are two types of confrontation today. The first type was termed as a political confrontation. This is working through the prescribed channels in a peaceful and orderly manner to precipitate change. Demonstrations The second type of confrontation was termed as the demonstrative group. McLaughlin felt that this type can be effective if done in an orderly and peaceful manner. McLaughlin also stated that he felt there was no room for violent confrontation on a college campus. The second speaker was Dr. Michael Kay. Kay stated that the disfunctions or strains of confrontationconfrontation is typified by value conflicts and conflicts between values and conditions. Kay further clarified this by saying that a value conflict demanded of a person on one hand might conflict with other demands. One example given is the value conflict one would experience between moral beliefs against killing and being inducted into the service to kill. In summing up, Kay said that "when democratic procedures fail to function, then we must relieve the strains upon us through confrontation."Power Structure The third speaker was Harry Berger. Berger believed that confrontation arose out of people's discontent with the power structure. He disagreed with McLaughlin's stand on working through the channels. Berger felt that the people who set up the channels did so to maintain their power and that people did not really have a great deal to say about these channels. Berger also stated that violent demonstrations have occurred because of overt reactions by certain factions in all groups. He believes that societies are based on violence and that violence at a confrontation is a natural outgrowth of this type of society. Nebulous Terms The final speaker was John Shea. He stated that the term confrontation is often dichotomized by nebulous terms of legality versus illegality, and peace versus violence. Shea felt that confrontation could be broken down into four types. The first type is the legal and peaceful confrontation such as picketting and marching. The second was deemed as peaceful but perhaps illegal, this being in the form of a sit-in. Third in line is the illegal but not necessarily violent confrontation. This would be similar to taking over a building and halting classes. The fourth is violent confrontation. Shea believed that confrontation often worked for people outside the system as a means of getting into the system, but also added that it could be a two way street. The forum was then open to discussion and questions from the audience. The next IGA forum will be held in Lawrence center commuter Lounge on Dec. 4. The topic will deal with activist groups on campus. </text>

              <text>Regular Meeting, March 6, 1963
Members present: Carl Bittenbender, Tina Congleton, Art Gerhardt, George Golden, Carol Hicks, Allan Jones, Dorothy Mather, Dorothy McCarty, John Noble, John Reed, Toni Wilkins, John Worthington, Bob Willard
Members Absent: Phyllis Birkhimer, Joe McSparran, Kenneth Mullin, Earl Patterson, Bob Berardelli, Norman Blagbrough
Faculty Present: Mrs. Inghram, Dr. Killinger
The meeting was called to order at 7:06p.m. by President John Worthington.
The secretary's minutes were approved as written.
Treasurer, Allan Jones, repoted a balance of $1,146. in the Student Government Treasury.
Old business was called for: Campus Charities was discussed. It was suggested that we set up booths around the campus to collect money. It was also suggested that we make a collection on just one night in all the dorms. President John Worthington sighted that we will leave it up to Joseph McSparran, President of the Sophomore class and head of the fund raising committee for Campus Charities.
Dorothy Mather reported as chairman of the Ram's Head Inn Committee. She asked John Reed who had been appointed to see Dr. Widdall about the signs, trash cans, and mats we asked for, if anything was being done. John reported that Dr. Widdall had said he knew nothing about the signs we ordered, and said the trash can idea was a good one. Dorothy told Government that she would investigate further. Dorothy also asked that Pennants be added to the budget list we will turn over for next year.
New business was called for: Carol Flynn representing twenty-five students on the campus petitioned Student Government for their support and endorsement to petition to higher authorities on the forming of a campus chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The following questions were asked and discussed:
"What is the purpose for forming this organization onour campus?
To promote relationships by smokers, etc.
Does the organization have an advisor?
We have asked Mr. David McKenty, but it is not for certain.
What is our responsibility in this matter as Student Government?
Just sending a recommendation saying we back the petition when this representative (Carol Flynn) takes it to higher authority for approval.
Will this organization bear West Chester's name?
Yes.
Do you feel that this organization is needed on our campus?
Yes.
Do you feel friction on this campus?
Yes, naturally. Not really apparent to all, you must be in the situation.
What area is the problem basically noted?
Social area, we don't think it is as good as it should be. Lack of understanding.
Will the organization follow the dictates of the National organization?
Not entirely.
Wouldn't such an organization split our campus?
We don't think so. It will let the Caucasian know where the Negro is.
Maybe it would be better to change the name instead of having it called the NAACP?
We don't want to do this."
John Reed moved that the Student Government endourse a petition for club membership of the NAACP chapter at West Chester, giving our backing and right to petition when it goes to higher authorities for approval. Art Gerhardt seconded the motion. The motion was carried with a seven to two vote and one abstaining. John will take motion to Student Affairs Council.
Tina Congleton asked if we had heard anything from Villanova on the convention? Nothing has been received. Dorothy Mather asked what we had decided to do on our own about holding our own convention. The issue was dropped.
George Golden brought to our attention the Fraternity situation which is being discussed on our campus, particularly in our newspaper.John Worthington then introduced Robert Willard, co-editor of the Quad Angles (Campus Newspaper) who stated that the newspaper is not for or against fraternities, it is there to present both side of any question. Bob also stated that he would give us as much space as we desire to state Student Government's view on fraternities. Tina Congleton suggested an article that would state our opinion, saying that Student Government can do nothing accept give our concent and only by a delegation from the students we can be convienced thatwe need fraternities. We are neutral, but will listen if anyone wants to present their ideas to us. George Golden moved that Student Governmentsend an article to the Quad Angles saying we will listen to any discussion for fraternities and sorities. John Reed seconded the motion. The motion was carried. Tina Congleton, George Golden, Art Gerhardt, and Carl Bittenbender volunteered to write said article.
A meeting was called for next Tuesday night, March 12, 1963 at 7 P.M. to discuss and outline thenew constitiution.
The above formed committee which is writing an article for the Quad Angles was appointed to also write an article informing the campus that there will be no Student Government elections this Spring, but will be held next fall.
Carl Bittenbender moved the meeting be adjourned. Norman Blag-brough seconded the motion. It was so moved.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Carol Hicks
