<text>Benjamin Tucker Tanner, minister and journalist, has gone unrecognized far too long, said Dr. William Seraile last Tuesday in the Special Collections Room of the Francis Harvey Green Library. Seraile, part of the Visiting Minority Scholar Program, wrote "The Paradox of Race: Benjamin Tanner, Philadelphia Minister." "Tanner was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 25, 1860. His father died when Tanner was still young," he said, "and his mother, Isabella Tanner was described by him as 'unusually religious,' a 'born leader.'" Seraile said circumstances forced Tanner to leave home for employment as a barber in Chicago. "Tanner began a diary in January, 1851, with many entries about work in the barber shops, current political and economical events, issues that he would pursue in his writings as editor of the Christian Reconfer(lB6B-1884)andtheAA/.£.Church Review (1884-1888)," said Seraile. "Tanner's editorials called for self-reliance, thriftiness, political empowerment, women's rights, community buildings, mission work in the Caribbean and Africa," he said. In 1988, Tanner was elected bishop in the A.M.E. Church, a position he held until his retirement in 1908. Tanner served the church in Canada, Bermuda, New England, Tennessee, Florida, Colorado and the mid-Atlantic states. He also said, "His devotion to the theology was reflected by the numerous poems he wrote for The Christian Recorder and A.M.E. Church Review. "Tanner died in 1923 after committing 67 years to African Methodism as a pastor, author, editor and bishop," he said. "Tanner's published writings certainly place him among the leadership of the nineteenth century black American and his views on race matters have echoed long after his death," Seraile said in closing.</text>

<text>Two weeks ago I sent a poem to The Quad to be published in memory of Steven A. Tillman, a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., who died of alcohol poisoning on April 17,1993, but the poem didn't appear in The Quad. Let it be known at Steven attended West Chester University from 1986 to 1990. In fact, he was a resident assistant at Sanderson in the fall of 1989 until the spring of 1990. Like many of us, Steven wanted to make a difference; he wanted to make the world a better place. But contrary to a lot of us, he didn't just sit on his Mβ hoping and waiting for amirack to happen. He reached out to people, especially to the young. He tried to ensure the survival of our young black people by educating Aem, and, most importantly, by showing them that some of us, although very few, really do care. Steven was a true leader. His leadership was motivated by deep caring rather than recognition. And I would really hate to see his hard work forgotten. I refuse to let history repeat itself by letting another one of our leaders go unnoticed. I wish that The Quad would dedicate more time to issues that concern the students and less time on trivial issues that no one even bothers to read.</text>

Obviously, neither the writer nor the editor who edited the article knew what month African-AmericanAfrican-American History Month was. This is not the first time The Quad has made mistakes concerning African-American students. As an African-American student leader on this campus, I have a commitment and responsibility to speak out when such mistakes are made. The responsibility of speaking out when mistakes are made is one that all African-American students should share. If we don't stand up for ourselves, the non-black students on the campus certainly will not. And we should not expect them to, nor should we expect African-Americans in administrative, staff or faculty positions to fight our battle. It is our battle to win or lose, but our recent response to the ignorance perpetrated by our student newspaper has displayed a laissez-faire attitude—an attitude that will do nothing but foster more ignorance. The only method to ensure that such embarrassingly ignorant mistakes do not continue is for African-American students to get involved in the production of our student newspaper; thus, we would have an opportunity to catch such mistakes before they reach the printer.</text>

<text>Professors file suit, claim damages By LARRY FUNK Six professors at West Chester State College filed suit in the Federal District Court, Philadelphia, December 8, against the college administration, the Board of Trustees, and the State Secretary of Education. The professors are claiming damages in excess of $1,200,000. Plaintiffs in the action are Professors Michael Kay, Robert Young, and Frank Fox, Department of History; Professor Thomas Treadwell, Department of Education; and Professors Stephen Parker and Martin Watkins, Department of English. Those who were named as defendants include Paul Rossey, President of the College; Albert Filano, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Byron Fleck, Dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences; John Clokey, Dean of the School of Arts and Letters; Harold Benda, Dean of the School The next issue of QUAD ANGLES will be distributed Feb. 2. Besides the members of the college Board of Trustees, David Kurtzman, the State Secretary of Education, was also named as a defendant. The plaintiffs allege that because of their support of Dr. Kay, the administration has violated the rights of the members of the Ad Hoc Committee of Concerned Faculty. Along with Dr. Kay, who was dismissed from his post May 31, Professors Treadwell, Parker, and Watkins, who were notified that their teaching contracts would not be renewed, are seeking reinstatement to their positions and damages for injury to their "academic and professional reputation and future employment prospects, in an amount in excess of $250,000 each, plus costs and attorney's fees. Seeking damages of $100,000 each are Dr. Fox, who was denied tenure and his annual salary increment, and Dr. Young, who was denied promotion to the rank of full professor. The six professors charged that they were victimized by the administration because of their activities on the Ad Hoc Committee. The committee was formed by the plaintiffs Parker and Fox. President Rossey commented, "We have received notice of the suit and the matter has been transmitted to the State Attorney General." Tenative arrangements have been made by the Justice Department to have the defendants represented by private council, Samuel Halpern, and in a limited capacity, William G. Williams, the Deputy Attorney General. Defending the plaintiffs is Mr. Jack Brian of the Upper Darby firm of Richard, Brian, Di Santi, and Hamilton. The charges against the administration submitted by the Ad Hoc Committee have also been investigated by the National Office of the American Association of University Professors last June. A report of their investigations can be expected in January or February. </text>

<text> Ad Hoc Committee files suit By TERRY COHEN The Ad Hoc Committee filed suit last week to obtain salary increments "which have always been attached to the signers of new contracts," according to Stephen Parker of the English Department. Parker is among various faculty members who have received terminal contracts and/ or been denied salary increments. Most of these are members of the Ad Hoc Committee. Besides Parker, Martin Watkins and Thomas Treadwell have been given terminal contracts for the 1970-71 academic year, and Dr. Frank Fox has not been given an increment. According to Parker, "This is the first time increments have not been given." He also said they were revoked in June, six months after the issuance of contracts.Dr. Filano, Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs, described the process by which a faculty member's salary increases. He There will be an important I student meeting TODAY at 10 I a.m. in PMA to organize the I West Chester segment of the I statewide March on Harris- I burg Bob Mclaughlin, Pres- I ident of IGA will speak at the I meeting about the objectives of I the march and its recent en- I dorsements by both the I administration and the Faculty I Senate. Stii- I dents and faculty who wish to I sign up for buses to the march I may do so in Mrs. Mackey's I office (IGA offices. Recitation I Hall). Those able to provide I extra transportation to the I march are asked to sign up as I well. said that the faculty manual contains an evaluation form, the same one which was in use during the 1969-70 academic year. An evaluation committee within the faculty member's department evaluates him, but his department chairman makes recommendations on the form as to whether the faculty member should receive tenure, be placed on probation, etc. It should be noted that recommendations are NOT final decisions. The contract and increment cases are now being heard by an appeals board, for which provision is made in the faculty manual. Members of the appeals board are Dr. John Turner of the History Department, Roy Sweet of the Music Department, Robert Rimel of the English Department, Miss Charlotte Good of the Education Department, and Dean Filano. The faculty manual states that appeals boards are to be staffed by two members of the faculty senate, one member of the general faculty, one department chairman, and the Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs. With the exception of the Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs, all other members are elected. According to some members of the Ad Hoc Committee, the AAUP has "pleaded with (Dean Filano) in the interest of fairness"-to resign from the appeals board. Dean Filano said at first, "That is not true," but then said that he had best not comment on that issue because he thought that it might "prejudice the hearings." Members of the Ad Hoc Committee involved do not seem to know the reasons for the action taken against them. "They haven't given us anything, absolutely nothing," said Treadwell. Said Dr. Filano, "They are given reasons, either oral or in writing." Dr. Filano added that Ad Hoc members are not the only faculty members who have been given terminal contracts, but he refused to disclose who received them, or how many were given out. </text>

<text>Comment By MARTIN A. WATKINS I hope that you will be able to print the following. The team of Rossey and Clokey performed in a remarkably synchronized manner on Wednesday, December 9, before a tongue-tied yet unappreciative audience of members of the WCSC School of Arts and Letters. The choreography and a few carefully chosen words were by Clokey, and the deceptive, semantic dance was by Rossey. At the conclusion, not one pair of hands applauded our great president's eight-minute performance, and the star of the R-C team left hurriedly. The alleged aim of Rossey,s presentation was merely to explain the resolution passed recently by the American Association of State College and Universities (AASCU), consisting of state college and university presidents like Rossey, which withdrew its support of the 1940 statement on academic freedom by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). However, the nature of the performance by the R-C team suggests that its real aim was to obtain approval of the AASCU resolution from the professors in the School of Arts and Letters. The main thrust of Rossey,s presentation was that the AASCU resolution merely "augmented" but did not really change the intent of the 1940 AAUP statement on academic freedom. The professors were even given to believe that the AAUP and AASCU were "moving towards a joint statement" abridging professors' rights in the 1940 AAUP statement. If it is true that the AASCU didn't really change the 1940 AAUP statement and if the two organizations were moving towards a joint statement, one wonders why the AASCU would even bother to make a statement--unless Rossey's explanations were manufactured from whole cloth in an attempt to hoodwink the faculty at West Chester.Furthermore, no one except Clokey and Rossey had copies of the AASCU statement, and only a handful of professors had seen the resolution. Yet intelligent professors were expected to approve the AASCU resolution. Just how dangerous, just how radical is the AAUP statement of 1940 on academic freedom that the AASCU, which previously supported the statement, resolved to withdraw its approval? In a word, the AAUP statement of 1940 says that the rights guaranteed to all Americans by our Constitution should not be denied, but should be enjoyed even by college professors--and it places upon college professors certain responsibilities which other Americans do not bear. It is the Magna Carta of our profession. The AAUP statement is not a revolutionary doctrine, not by the farthest stretch of the imagination, except to those who feel that democracy itself is a danger -- and revolutionary. College professors do not need to suffer more repression, to have their inherent rights further abridged, but rather those abridged rights must be restored, strengthened, and extended if colleges are to become democratic institutions in a society that claims to be democratic. Indeed, colleges and universities, which profess to uphold and to teach democracy, are the most fitting places for democracy to be practiced. It is most interesting that of the 25 institutions now on the AAUP censure list 18 are state controlled, presided over by presidents like Rossey. But there is no Berkeley, no Chicago, and no Columbia on the list -- schools to which Dr. Rossey said he would not allow West Chester State College to deteriorate. Nor does one find Yale, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Princeton, Dartmouth, or Delaware on the list. No first-rate institutions are censured. West Chester State College was censured once before and appears to be heading for censure again, thanks to Dr. Rossey, the Board of Trustees, various deans, and some department heads. The very people who are most guilty of violations of academic freedom and constitutional rights -- state college and university presidents -- say, in effect, that we professors have too much academic freedom. But the presidents of Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Berkeley, Chicago, etc. feel otherwise. And their schools are not censured. We are expected to agree to the abridgement of rights guaranteed by our Constitution. Who in his right mind would agree to such a request? Who would agree in advance to officiate at his own funeral? The AASCU and Dr. Rossey propose restrictions and abridgements to our rights in the name of academic freedom. I am reminded of Emerson's statement about Daniel Webster, who supported his defense of slavery on the grounds of patriotism. Said Emerson, "The word PATRIOTISM on the lips of Webster is like the word LOVE on the lips of a courtesan."It would be most fitting and entirely proper for the faculty of West Chester State College as a group and the student body as a separate group to condemn both the AASCU and President Rossey for the resolution withdrawing support of the 1940 AAUP statement on academic freedom. </text>

<text>W.C. SPORTS By MARK KLIGMAN Boxing tourney finals promises keen action After three upsets, a fine professional sparring exhibition by the hottest world middleweight championship contender, Benny Briscoe, and a near knock-out in the heavyweight division (saved by the bell), I found some of the best amateur boxing in the State of Pa. It happened right here at West Chester, just two weeks ago, and that was only the preliminaries! Tomorrow night, the top fighters from both West chester andCheyney touch gloves again for the final championship bouts in all weight classes. With the trophies sitting at the judges table, polished, waiting for that final engraving, let me tell you now that when these men step into the ring starting at 7:30 p.m., they will have nothing on their minds but business. The evening will begin with two novice bouts in the Featherweight (Keith Crone and Rick Hindenlang) and Lightweight (John Gallager and Bruce Moyer) divisions. Moving into the Light Welterweight class, Ron Aurit, prelimwinner steps into the ring again trying for his second victory over the favored Richard "Goober" Piccard. The Welterweight class may show some real promise when good ole Charley Brown (who squeezed by Mike Cawley in the prelims) will get his trophy shot at Steve Laverty. Brown is favored, but he better be ready for Laverty's fast foot style. In the Light Middleweight division, two prelim winners slug it out for the honors. Jim Brackett, a brown belt in Karate, will curb his self-defense style to the Marquis of Queensbury for three, two minute rounds against the favored Allan Woodward, a real hard-hitter. Good luck to both, and watch those fast hands, Al. Bob Armston, a former undefeated Golden Gloves competition will go three with Bruce Hornberger, a prelim winner. This should be a good fight. Bob's very powerful left hook drove Huk Bethea into a forfeit after two rounds during the prelims. Look for some nice style in this Middleweight bout. As usual, the two best are saved for last. Beginning with the Light Heavyweight fight when Frank Fry will waltz six minutes with a real tough Philly boy Ed MGinn, who, incidently, came up the hard way. If you are looking for some fine style boxing, Fry is your man. He has graceful foot-work, smooth, deadly combinations, and is favored over MGinn, but MGinn is no slouch either. He's a driver from way back, so don't underestimate these tough Philly boys (right Muhammund?). Look for a possible upset here, between Fry's speed and MGinn's power. Of course, the haymaker of the evening, the Heavyweight division features champ Alex Zdrok (190 lbs.) slugging it out (and I do mean slug!) with Jerry McAlinn (225 lbs.). Zdrok, Delaware Valley Golden Gloves semifinalist, is the Boxing Club's president and inspiration. Both fellows are Philly boys, have plenty of ring experience, and after Jerry's near victory knock-out in the prelims, everyone should be out of the stands for this fight. Although Jerry outweighs Alex by thirty—five pounds, Alex was rather confident during a workout interview that his speed and style would come through for a win. When asked about Jerry's knock-down left hook, Alex commented: "I know about Jerry's strong left, but you can read it all the way." I hope Alex doesn't suffer from any eyestrain that night, or he may never read his name on the winner's trophy. Good luck all - see you at Hollinger.</text>

<text>d Hoc does "proper thing" Members of the Ad Hoc Committee will begin their courtroom tangle with the Administration of West Chester State College next Monday, Feb. 8. Those suing the Administration are seeking damages in excess of $1,200,000. Plaintiffs are Professors Michael Kay, Robert Young, Frank Fox, Thomas Treadwell, Stephen Parker and Martin Watkins. Named as defendants are Paul Rossey, Albert Filano, Byron Fleck, John Clokey, Harold Benda, Walter Ridley, Donn Riley, and Joseph Thorson. Also named is David Kurtzman, State Secretary of Education. Terminal Contracts In addition io the dismissal of Dr. Kay, Professors Treadwell, Watkins, and Parker have received terminal contracts. Dr. Fox was denied tenure and hi-s annual salary increment, and Dr. Young was denied promotion to the rank of full professor. The six feel that these actions came about because of their support of Dr. Kay. The plaintiffs' attorney is Jack Brian of the Upper Darby firm of Richard, Brian, Di Santi, and Hamilton. Counsels for the defendants are Samuel Halpern and the Robert Gawthrop firm. Deputy Attorney General William G. Williams will coordinate the activities of the defense. "The Proper Thing" Brian obtained a restraining order against the administration two weeks ago, prohibiting the hiring of any additional faculty for 21 days. "It was the proper thing to do," he said. "The termination of these people's contracts. . .is outrageous." He aims to demonstrate that the six were not treated as they were because of a lack of professional ability, but because "they had the audacity to exercise their freedom of speech," and because "the Administration can't stand criticism." Brian hopes that the trial will be concluded within the week. If the final outcome favors the administration, Brian will appeal, which "could take months." If the restraining order terminates before the trial is over, he will apply for renewal. </text>

<text>Moratorium on Thursday By KENT DEL ROSSI On Thursday, Feb. 12, there will be a moratorium on classes here at West Chester. The Moratorium, organized in classes and two open student meetings.Meetings in Philips The first of these student meetings will be held in philips Memorial Auditorium at 10 a.m. At twelve noon there will be a picket in front of Philips Memorial. Later, at 3 p.m. there will be another student meeting in Lawrence Center, to which President Rossey and Interim Dean Fllano have been invited. A candlelight march will be held at 10 p.m., ending the day of moratorium. While the moratorium has not been sanctioned by the administration, Larry D'Antonio, President of IGA, urges all students concerned with academic freedom to participate. AAUP The issue of academic freedom has been one of great controversy over the last few months. In the vanguard of the issue is the case of Dr. Michael Kay. The latest episode in this conflict of academic freedom was the visitation of two members of the national American Association of University Professors (AAUP) to this campus on January 27. As to the importance of these visitors, there is a difference of opinion between Dr. Fllano, Interim Dean of Academic Affairs, and Dr. Kay. Dr. Filano View Dr. Filano, one of the members of the administration whom the AAUP visited, stressed the fact that this meeting was an informal meeting, a fact-finding meeting. He believes that the two members of the AAUP were here only to acquaint themselves with the issue, to hear both sides of the story. Dr. Filano felt that the outcome of the meeting was positive. He said that the administration has followed AAUP policy to the letter in the handling of the Kay case, and that he does not expect any problems with the AAUP. As Filano put it, "We firmly believe that we have handled the situation in the best manner possible and in the best interest of all the students." According to Dr. Filano, the topic of censure was never mentioned at this meeting. Kay's View However, Dr. Kay viewed the visit differently. Kay said that the AAUP representatives came in response to a letter he sent to the Washington office. Dr. Kay also stated that the representatives were here because 'they felt that the case merited an immediate action on their part to attempt to get the administration to see the seriousness of the situation." The reason Kay notified the AAUP was that he felt that administrative actions were dubious and open to investigation. The AAUP came here, Kay indicated, order to show concern for alleged violations of academic freedom by the administration, centers around an all-day boycott of Class boycott to show support for academic freedom to head off the necessity of a formal investigation with the possibility of censure being the outcome.Full-scaled Hearing? The AAUP reportedly outlined to Dr. Kay that they feel his case has to go before a fullscaled hearing at the college. If this committee feels that Kay is in the right they could appeal the case and ask for the decision to be reversed. If there is no hearing the AAUP would immediately begin a full-scale investigation. If the administration ignores the decision of this committee (assuming that it is in Kay's favor), the AAUP may decide to start procedures to censure the college. Kay stated that "unless there is a reversal of the decision, it is my firm belief based upon past experience, knowledge of how AAUP has acted In previous cases of this type, and statements made to us by the two representatives of AAUP that the school will be censured.'1' Censure When asked what effect censure might have on the college Kay stated that the effect would not be immediate. However, the effect would be felt over a period of a few years. Kay said, "If censure occurs, a vast majority of qualified Individuals would avoid the college. The closer one gets to mediocrity in effectiveness in teaching the less effect censure would have." Dr. Rossey gave a different view. When asked if AAUP censure would have any effect on the college, he said, "Not at all; well I shouldn't say not at a 11... it affects us to the extent that there will be some union-oriented professors that will not come here. But that's the only way it affects us." </text>

<text>The nineteen nays TO THE EDITOR: On Tuesday evening, January 20, 1970, the West Chester state College Faculty Senate voted 19 to 15 not to recommend that the History Department reevaluate the procedures used in denying reappointment to Dr. Michael Kay. For want of two votes that would have produced a tie, the Nineteen Nays in the faculty Senate refused a request from their own colleagues in the history department, a substantial majority of which petitioned for the reappointment of Dr. Kay. Those who opposed Dr. McKenty's mild and facesaving resolution, claimed that very few on campus know all the facts. Yet they voted to learn even less. Who is trying to hide something now? We have only begun to persevere to bring this entire matter into the open. The Administration cannot turn its back on the questions raised by responsible members of the faculty. Let us affirm that we believe in a strong and independent Faculty Senate. We respect those who stood up and spoke in support of the resolution to return the evaluation to the history department. Fifteen votes in the Faculty Senate are most encouraging. Surely with that body divided so closely, the Administration would have to be blind indeed to pretend that all is well. Some fundamental questions will have to be raised. To whom does the school belong? What is the proper role for administrators? What is meant by the oft-proclaimed principle of academic freedom? We feel that the school belongs to everyone; to every new generation of students who come in good faith to study and mature within its walls. It belongs to the faculty, old and young, whose minds are open to the needs of those students in a changing world. It belongs to the community, whose problems call for a remedy. It is for the sake of those students, that faculty and the entire community, that voices from all directions should be listened to. Surely the Nineteen Nays will not stop that. The Ad Hoc committee of ConcernedConcerned Faculty has grown steadily. It has carried the main burden in the defense of Dr. Kay and the principles of academic freedom. It is now time for others to join our ranks. For the first time in the history of West Chester State College, those who wish to change conditions are not isolated. Those who are exposed to intimidation will be protected and defended. We call upon the faculty and students for continuing support. DO NOT ALLOW THE SCHOOL TO BE CENSURED. Rather let us censure those who are playing with the future of this institution. This school does not belong to them. They do not belong at the school. Frank Fox Professor of History</text>
