<text>The indoor track season is off and running with practice at Hollinger Fieldhouse. The Rams', under the guidance of coaches Bill Butler and Cliff Morgan, have had remarkable success over the years. The team has won 47 meets in a row (the last defeat was to Delaware in 1966) and 40 straight home victories at Hollinger. This year the team has an excellent chance in maintaining that streak, as Coach Butler has a multitude of talent in all events. Jn the 440 and 600 yard runs, 'l.ere are juniors Jim Agnew and Frank Vnuk along with sophomore Paul Rauenzahn. Agnew is the Hollinger Fieldhouse recordholder in the 440. In the sprints, Sam Reid and Henry Barr should be outstanding. Reid was the MAC champion in 100 and 220 yard dashes during the last outdoor season. Senior Bill Showers and sophomore Ram Attarian will be the teams 880 and 1000 yard run specialists. Showers will also be running the mile as will seniors Dave Patterson and Bill Dawson. In the two mile run sophomore Chuck Marquette, along with Patterson and Dawson, will provide the team with excellent chances in dominating all distances races. In the hurdling events, the Rams have sophomore Mel Hinton. Also watch out for freshmen Dave Jensen and Jeff Warren. The Rams are also very strong in the field events. In the shot, Stu Musser, Jim Keys (U.S. Air Force Champion) and freshman Jim Sekulski will provide the team with a great deal of muscle power. In the pole vault, the Rams have Joe Talley and Rob Roup, who both hold the school record at 14-6. Also freshman Dave Gorman, who has jumped 14-6 in high school, should add to West Chester domination in the pole vault. The Rams weakest event, would probably be the high jump. However freshman Kirk White, who has jumped 6-4 in high school, should help out in that category along with Lynn Schaeffer and Steve Wilson. The first meet of the season is the West Chester open on December 15 at Hollinger Fieldhouse. With the huge amount of talent the team has, they should have little difficulty in giving West Chester another winning team.</text>

<text>Jogging to an easy victory, the Ram's track team defeated Georgetown University and Saint Joseph's College last Friday night. West Chester accumulated 81 points to Georgetown's 22-1/2 and St. Joe's 22-1/2. The Rams showed their superiority by winning six of ten individual events and winning both the four lap relay in 1:17.3 and the one mile relay in 3:33.7. Outstanding in the field events were Jim Keys in the shot put and Joe Talley in the pole vault." Keys' winning throw of 49'3/4" was good enough to win the event and beat out freshman teammate Gene Sekulski, but short of the 52' necessary to qualify for the JC4A Championship Meet to be held •n the beginning of March. Talley's jump of 14'0" was also sufficient enough t() win, but he too fell short of qualifying when he missed his attempt at 14'9". In the mile, Chuck Marquette accelerated past teammate Dave Patterson in the last lap to win the event. West Chester also won the remaining places in the event as Bill Dawson finished second, followed by Patterson and Bill Showers. In the two mile, Patterson came back to run a 9:36.8, which gave him the victory over Justin Gubbins of Georgetown. Marquette finished third. In the 45 yard dash, Joe Baliff was nosed out at the tape by Georgetown sprinter Joe Mattingly. Both were clocked in the tinted 5.0. Mattingly also won the 220 yard dash as he beat out Ed Boldosser of W.C. in the last 40 yards of the race. Jim Agnew continued his winning ways by capturing the 440 yard dash in 51.9. St. Joe's sprinter Tony Natale was second followed by Charlie Griffin of W.C. The 880 yard run was the most exciting race as Joe Tomczuk of St. Joseph edged out W.C.'s Frank Vnuk in the time of 1:59.6. Mike Black, also of St. Joseph's, finished third. Other notable performances were displayed by Mel Hinton and Dave Jensen in the 45 yard hurdles, Bob Bair in the sprints, Rob Roup in the pole vault and Kirk White in the high jump.</text>

<text> A West Chester student was arrested last Tuesday after two-thirds of the copies of the QUAD were discovered missing. Jonathan Grayson admitted removing the 4200 newspapers. He was arrested for stealing 350 of them, after a witness saw him throw a stack in a trash can on the second floor of the Sykes College Union building. He has been charged with criminal mischief and theft. The staff first discovered the missing papers during their regular staff meeting last Tuesday at 11 a.m. NumerousNumerous people called the office stating that there were no QUAD's in the usual campus locations. A few reporters went out in search of the papers and found some of them in trash cans in Main Hall and Sykes and found other stacks of papers under the trees behind Lawrence. Some papers were also discovered in different men's bathrooms. After the group of reporters found the misplaced papers, the Editor-in- Chief, Ellen Sands filed a complaint with campus Law Enforcement officuds.officuds.After a news article appeared in the Daily Local News about the incident, Black Student Union President, Wayne Locust called the editor of the QUAD and stated that if charges brought against Grayson are not dropped, the newspaper would "have to deal with the consequences." He also suggested that the paper not run any article about the theft. Last Tuesday, Grayson approached two QUAD staff members in front of the office in room 223 of Sykes and expressed his displeasure to the coverage of the Homecoming activities. Grayson complained that the newspaper had discriminated against the BSU by not printing a picture of their float which won first place in the Homecoming competition. He also complained about a picture which showed last year's Black queen crowning the new white queen. The picture only showed the arms of last year's Black queen. Photography Editor, Gerard BurkhartBurkhart stated the picture of the queen's crowning just happened to be taken that way and was not cropped or cut in any way. He said that the homecoming photographers did not intentionally try to cut any group out. According to Locust, Grayson's actions were not representative of the BSU but was an individual action. During a meeting with Sands Thursday afternoon, Locust said he believed Grayson reacted so strongly to the QUAD's coverage because of a builtup feeling of disenchantment with the QUAD's attitude in previous years toward Blacks and Black-related activities.Locust explained that the college's general prejudiced atmosphere may have contributed to Grayson's behavior. He also cited two other mistakes the newspaper recently made which are related to the BSU. The QUAD published an advertisement in which a typographical error appeared. Instead of "BSU" the ad read
"BSB." In an article about a Black writer who recently spoke on campus, the wrong location was listed. The editor explained that typographical errors occur regularly and that the error was not intentional. The article was not written by a reporter but was taken directly from a press release. Locust believes that the QUAD staff should be a little more sensitive in its coverage of Black sponsored or Black related activities.

<text>The indoor track team swept 11 of 12 events in destroying their tri-meet opponents Millersville State College and Catholic University. The final tally was WCSC 90-1/2, Catholic U. 20, and MSC 15-1/2. The highlight of the meet had to be the record breaking performances of Joe Talley and Bob Roup. This Golden Ram pair broke their own existing Hollinger Field House record of 14/6" in the pole vault. Talley and Roup both vaulted 14'9", with the former winning the competition of the basis of fewer misses. The Rams Dave Gorman took third place with a vault of 13'0". WCSC fared well in the two remaining remaining field events. Jim Keys and Gene Sekulski were one-two in the shot put. Keys' winning footage was 50'll-l/2". The Rams took first and third in the high jump. Freshman Kirk White won the event with a jump of 6'2" while Lynn Scheffer finished third by jumping 6'o". The 45 yard dash finals caused the most excitement of the running events. In the preliminary heats, WCSC sent its best three sprinters to the finals. The all-WCSC final saw Sam Reid burn a 4.8 time which was just quick enough to edge out teammates Henry Barr and Joe Bailiff. Both Barr and Bailiff were clocked at 4.8+, with Barr awarded second. The quality of the Ram sprinters must be a comfort to head coach Bill Butler The intensity of the 45 yard dash may have taken the edge off in the 220' This was the lone event that the Rams failed to finish first. Clarence Musgrove of MSC took first with a time of 2.3.0, WCSC's Barr and Reid finished third and fourth respectively. The Golden Rams' strongest event was the mile run. WCSC swept the event by copping all four places. Dave Patterson finished first (4:27.4) and was followed by Bill Dawson, Bill Showers, and Joe lezzi. Patterson exhibited tremendous strength and stamina as he comfortably won the two mile in the time] of 9:25.1. The middle distances also had a strong Ram representation. Bob Dougherty took first place in the 880 (2:00) and was closely followed by Showers and Paul Rauenzahn. Jim Agnew ran a strong race in the 440 by ripping off a 51.6 and first place. The two relays were also won by the Rams. The four-lap relay consisting of Bailiff, Ed Boldosser, Rick Corrado, and Reid were victorious in a 1:16.9 clocking.Agnew anchored the mile-relay team (Whitsell, Griffin, Bixler, and Agnew) to first place easily out-distancing Millersville in 3:31.8. Dave Jensen (5.6), Mel Hinton (5.7) and Jeff Warren (5.7*) notched the first three Golden Ram places in the 45 yard high hurdles. The Rams' next encounter will put their 53 straight unbeaten streak against Temple and Gettysburg. The meet will take place Friday at Hollinger Field House. </text>

<text>The West Chester State indoor track squad ran its unbeaten string to 55, as they whipped Temple and Gettysburg at Hollinger Field House, Friday night Golden Ram head coach, Bill Butler,, had expected some stiff competition from Temple, but WCSC completely dominated both the Owls and Gettysburg. The final margin of victory was WCSC 87 points, Temple 36 points, and Gettysburg 3 points. West Chester won both relays. The mile relay consisting of Paul Rauenzahn, Ram Attarian, Bill Bixler, and Jim Agnew WOtl in a time of 3:34.7. THE FOUR-LAP RELAY was the most crowd pleasing event of the evening. Joe Bailiff ran the first leg and was inadvertently bumped in the tunnel. The diminutive speedster stumbled, and almost fell in the straight away. He recovered, gained some valuable ground, but still handed off to Rick Corrado in third place. Corrado was making up some distance when he ran past the high jump pit. Previous to Corrado's arrival, a jumper and a startled Corrado hurdled the flying ' bar. Corrado then handed off to Boldasser who ran an impressive leg. Ed blew past second place Gettysburg, and gained considerable ground on Temple. He handed off to Reid in a strong second place position. Reid turned on all the speed as he roared past the Temple anchorman to win the relay in 1:17.0. The Rams' Jim Keys and Gene Sekulshi finished one-two in the shot put. Keys' effort of 51'4" was good enough to top Sekulski's 50' 5 1/4 ". Both men improved their distances that saw them finish one-two in last week's meet. Bob Roup, copped first place in the pole vault with a vault of 13' 6". The Rams' other strong vaulter, Joe Talley, failed to compete due to injury. However, this pair will represent the Golden Rams next week at the IC4A meet which will be held at Princeton, N.J. The high jump was the lone event which the Rams did not win. Temple's George Horn won the event at 6'B" while WCSC's Kirk White finished third with a leap of 6' 2". White will also participate in the IC4A meet next week. A strong WC event was the 45 yard high hurdles. Jeff Warren (5.7*) won the event with Mel Hinton (5.8) and Dave Jensen (5.8) close behind. This trio will also make the trip to Princeton. West Chester will also have their three excellent sprinters in next week's IC4A meet. On Friday, Sam Reid reeled off a quick 4.8 which nosed out Temple's Turrel Burnett (4.9) and teammate Joe Bailiff (4.9). Reid, Bailiff, and the injured Henry Barr have all qualified for the meet. Reid came back in the 220, winning - the event by churning out a 23.6. This time again bested Burnett's 23.7, while WC's Ed Boldasser took third with a 23.8. West Chester completely dominated the 440. Jim Agnew, who will represent the Rams at Princeton, was clocked in 51.5, winning the race. Frank Vnuk (51.6-f), Charles Griffin (51.7) and Paul Rauenzahn (53.2) completed the WC domination. Bill Dawson and Bill Showers were the co-winners of the mile with a 4:27.8 time. The duo had a five second advantage over their nearest rivals. Dave Patterson ran a strong two mile (9:31.4) to record another WC first place. Patterson will take his purple & gold to Princeton. Dawson finished third in the event at 10:06.7. In the 880, Bob Dougherty won for the second week in a row with a time of 2:00.8. Showers finished second (2:01.8) and Vaughn Zimmermen took third (2:02.2).</text>

<text>The West Chester State Golden Rams lost their first game ever at Farrell Stadium as they dropped a 13-7 decision to Hillsdale College. The contest was played before a homecoming crowd of 7000 on a near-perfect day for football. The Rams and the Chargers played to a scoreless tie in the first half. The West Chester defense played extremely well limiting Hillsdale to just four first downs, and forcing the Chargers to punt six times, despite injuries to Dennis lonavale and Tom Hennessey. Bob Cianni replaced lonavale, and Paul Tucci came in for Hennessey, joining the rest of the Ram defensive unit in keeping Hillsdale off the scoreboard. West Chester had the only opportunity of the half to score when Barry Stevenson attempted a 50 yard field goal. Stevenson's attempt was on target, but fell a few yards short of the uprights. Otherwise, the Rams didn't put too much together offensively. They did rush for 135 yards, but Warren Mays passed for just 17 yards completing only a pair of passes. The second half was more of the same with the exception of Hillsdale converting on key plays and emerging with the victory. The Chargers mounted an offensive drive early in the third period that carried to the WC 19 yard line. The drive was constructed completely of running plays. This is where key play No. 1 emerged. Hillsdale's quarterback Don MacGillvrey threw what was to be his only pass of the second half. It resulted in the contest's initial touchdown to his tight end Dave Young. Placekicker Saad Jallard converted to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead. The score seemed to inspire the Golden Rams. Guy VanAlstine ripped off a 34 yard gain and set the Rams up with good field position in Charger territory. Enter key play No. 2. West Chester was faced with a fourth and one at the Charger 20 — Herb Mills cracked into the line but failed to pick up the first down. The defense held, and gave the pigskin back to the Golden Rams. Once again the Purple & Gold stuck to the ground and moved into Hillsdale territory. Key play No. 3 surfaced when Tony Motolese was jarred loose from the football stopping a possible game tying drive. Although West Chester outscored Hillsdale 7-6 in the fourth quarter, the Chargers completely dominated the final period. MacGillvray engineered a time consuming (8 minute) drive that was entirely composed of running plays. This drive not only resulted in the winning Charger touchdown with John Waters going over from the three, but it kept the football out of WC hands for over half the period. The drive created key plays numbers four and five. The Chargers were faced with a fourth and one at the 30, and made it. Hillsdale was also confronted with a fourth and two at the WC seven yard line. In a surprise move, head coach Frank Waters decided not to kick a field goal, but go for the first down. His judgment was correct as the Chargers picked up that vital first down. The West Chester offense finally opened up with an all out passing attack. A long aerial from Mays to Merritt Kersey set up what was to be the only Ram score late in the game. Mills dove over from the one, and Stevenson's placement averted a shutout and cut the final margin to 13-7. There was no question that West Chester lost the ballgame. They were outplayed by an excellent Hillsdale Charger (6-2 record) football team. It was just a curious type defeat. Curious in that the Rams seemed to be playing very conservatively on offense. The running attack broke off some big gainers, but wasn't very consistent. The passing game was almost totally ignored until the contest was well out of reach. This tight, playing it close to the vest, type conservative play was not the observation of just this writer, but of almost everyone in the pressbox. The open, explosive offense that has typified West Chester football wasn't present when the game was on the line. The defense played a pretty good ballgame with the exception of the long drive in the fourth period. Jack Sweeney, Charles Keenan, Tucci, and Mel Hinton played tough on the front line. Billy Edger, Paul Givler, Orfio Collilouri, and Mike Fitzpatrick played aggressively behind the line. Ken Bardorf, Cianni, Pete DiFillippo, Charles McKenna, and Kevin McAneny played adequate secondary. You can't pin the loss on the play of the defense. The Golden Rams will need a super effort if they are to bounce back with a victory next Saturday. The opponents are the Villanova Wildcats, fresh off a convincing 24-7 victory over the Delaware Blue Hens. Game time is 1:30 and the contest will be played at Villanova.</text>

<text>With this Saturday's season opener at the University of New Hampshire fast approaching, Coach John Furlow and his staff are still trying to come up with the right combination for West Chester State's varsity football squad. With sixteen lettermen gone — including quarterback Warren Mays and tight end Bob Hartshorn (Dallas Cowboys), halfback Guy Van Alstine (New York Giants), and defensive end Mel Hinton (Dallas Cowboys) — 1975 can be seen as a major rebuilding year for the Golden Rams. West Chester faces its toughest schedule in history this year. The Rams will open with New Hampshire and move on to play American International College (West Chester won a 24-21 cliff-hanger againt them last year), Hillsdale College of Michigan (they spoiled Rampage weekend two years ago 13-7), and perennial powerhouse the University of Delaware. To top it off the Pennsylvania Conference teams are all well balanced and powerful, with East Stroudsburg and Cheyney seen as the cream of the crop. Coach Furlow is still searching for the quarterback who will make the team go. Seniors Chuch Menas and John Newman both have looked good in the pre-season as have Darwin Breaux and frosh Ed Herbster. According to Furlow, "Menas is a good runner and has opened up the outside game for us. Newman is experienced, has been throwing well, and runs the option well. Herbster is new and is still getting used to the system. Breaux is pressing hard and may surprise some people." West Chester's defensive backfield was hit hard by graduation and Furlow is still shifting people around to fill the gaps. Experience in the secondary will come from senior letterman John Barr. Despite the graduation losses, Furlow is "cautiously optimistic" about the season. On the plus side, the Rams have a strong offensive backfield. Fullback Herb Mills should bring back West Chester's traditional bruising ground game. Outside speed will come from Chip Zawoiski and Clarence Miller. Furlow is excited about the depth of his backfield, "Paul Brown is a frosh half who we expect big things from, Dom Herbst is a converted quarterback and is big and fast, and Dave Novogratz — another freshman — has great potential." Offensively the Rams return Rich Hall and Jack Simon at tackle, Mike O'Connor at split end, and co-captain Mike Gowen at tight end. On the defense West Chester will rely on Joe Bucelli at end, Dave Sharpless at nose guard, co-captain Ron Horvat at end, and-ajough linebacker corps of Gary Smith, John Scanlon, Paul Givler, and Jay Weidenbaugh. Generally, the coaching staff is hopeful that West Chester can equal last year's 8-2 record. About this year's tougher schedule Furlow admits "that it's a step up for us. We are a young team and we have no breathers on our schedule. New Hampshire is this Saturday and it should be a great game. They're picked to win the Yankee Conference. They have a good quarterback, lots of lettermen back and they won five out of their last six games in 1974." West Chester has been the Eastern Division champions in the Pennsylvania Conference for the past six years, but have lost in the championship game to Slippery Rock the last three. Furlow thinks the Rams have a "better than average" chance to take the eastern crown again. Also West Chester wants another crack at the Rock. The championship game will be played at the eastern school this year (meaning here if the Rams win it) and as John Furlow says West Chester is "tired of being the bridesmaid, this year she's going to be the bride." Eleven weeks from now we'll know for sure.</text>

<text>It's certainly been a great year for West Chester State football. In addition to winning the Pennsylvania State Conference East title, the Ram gridders have had two players sign pro contrails and a third is on the verge of signing. Mel Hinton and Bob Hartshorn have already inked pacts with the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. Guy VanAlst ine is ready to become a New York Giant, also of the NFL. All three are free agents. Hinton, a defensive end, and Hartshorn, a tight end on the Rams squad agreed to become property of the Cowboys on Thursday, the day after the NFL collegiate player draft was completed. Neither was taken in the draft, but both were probably high on the free agent list for Dallas to act so quickly. VanAlst ine, a running back, was also approached on Thursday by the Giants. "It's almost definite that I'm going to play up there (New York) unless they offer me some ridiculously low sum of money," VanAlsline said Saturday from his home in Tiappe, Pa. "Right now it's just a matter of agreeing on a contract." Both Hinton and Hartshorn signed similar contracts. The agreement is for three vears plus a bonus for signing and performance bonuses for all three years. However, they must make the Dallas team this year or the contract is void, with the exception of the bonus for signing. If they make the team the first year, all three years of the contract will be honored. Hint on declined to comment on the monetary figures saying only that he is happy with the agreement. Hartshorn could not be reached for comment. Hartshorn, who had a fine career for West Chester as a tight end, will be tried as a running back by the Cowboys while Hinton will be tested as an outside linebacker. Hinton, at 6'4" and 215 pounds, doesn't foresee any difficulties in converting to linebacker. "The defensive end posit ion on our team (West Chester's) is similar to the linebacker position in the pros. We play a 5-2 defense which means three linemen are down and the ends stay up. I've already had to cover backs coming out of backrield on pass plays." As a good athlete capable of playing many positions, Hartshorn, who goes 6'2", 210, should not have a great deal of trouble adjusting to the running back spot. Both players will fly to Dallas in March for a three day session to meet the coaching staff. They will return in May to attend classes and learn the Dallas football system, and then fly to California for training camp in July. "This is all due to coach John Bove (defensive line coach) and coach John Furlow, and you can quote me on that," said Hinton. "If it wasn't for them none of this would have happened." Hinton, a senior, made the Pennsylvania State Conference second team at defensive end this past season. No career defensive statistics were available. Hartshorn, also a senior, finished- his career as a Ram with 76 catches for 1012 yards and 4 touchdowns. His average per catch was 13.3 yards. Hartshorn made second team all-star at tight end in the PSC in 1973 and was second in receiving in the Eastern division that same year. This past season, Hartshorn was chosen as an ECAC first team all-star and a PSC first team all-star. He led the PSC in receptions with 45. Hartshorn also shares a West Chester record for most receptions in one game with 12. Hinton, Hartshorn and very soon VanAlstine will join Carl Gershhach, Tom Pierantozzi, Doug Olsen, and Merritt Kersey as West Chester graduates to sign pro football contracts.
