<text>Black Man of the Universe To the Editor: In the latter portion of the previous decade, this nation found the initiation of a Black Renaissance which has attempted to find Black Uniqueness apart from the White Status Quo in which so many of us were a product of. Educational institutions, in compliance with this Awakening, immediately began curriculum integration of Black culture and awareness. West Chester state college has also attempted to give recognition of the Grand Legacy of Blackness. However, the most controversial issue facing this institution presently could also prove to be the most prodigious factor which could inhibit or possibly completely incapacitate the progress of Black studies here at West Chester. This letter is-not a contestation on our behalf to castigate the immorality of the admlnistra- Mve prejudices which have been exercised against Dr. Kay because of his political and ideological preferences; enough treatises have been constructed concerning this particular aspect of the controversy. The object of our most sincere plea is in the interest of the maintenance of qualitative Black History on this campus. Black History is an intense emotional experience; no other individual is as competent to convey such an experience as Dr. Kay. He understands the problem and the philosophy of the Black Man and why he thinks as he does. The history which Dr. Kay teaches is corrective History. The history which Dr. Kay teaches is Corrective because it gives the complete truth of the contributions of the Black Man of the Universe. The Administration has promulgated that even if Dr. Kay is discharged, Black History shall still maintain its relevance. However, it is our contention that no other professional could teach the course and maintain its present content quality. Di» Kay has also been very sincere in his attempt to rectify the great injustice which has been perpetrated against Black culture In this nation. This faculty member has taken special interest in every endeavor by the Black student Body to integrate Blackness into the general student body activity on campus. As far as general campus atmosphere is concerned, no other faculty member has done more to elevate West Chester state College's position from a speck of dust in the corridor of apathy. <text> Correspondent The brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. sponsored an exhibit in honor of "Black Women In Light of Their Achievements." The exhibit honors Black History Month. Eight outstanding women from West Chester's campus were chosen. These women include: Barbara Black, Venezula R. Proctor, Ruby Johnson Jones, A. Jasmin Thigpen, Cynthia S. Nash, Beverly S. Renfrow, Lucille R. Morgan, and Theresa M. Dent. Black is an assistant professor and coordinating counselor at West Chester, also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Proctor is a junior majoring in Criminal Justice who presently holds the position of Basilus (pres.) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Theta lota Chapter. Jones was the first Black faculty member to join the staff at West Chester, in addition to being the co-sponsor of the Student Christian Association and a representative for the Human Relations Council. She did much to ease the racial tension that prevailed throughout the sixties. Thigpen, a junior majoring in Social Welfare, is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and has been active in the Black Student Union for two years. Nash is a senior majoring in Social Welfare and she holds the position of first Vice-President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Epsilon Psi Chapter. Renfrow, a sophomore majoring in Elementary Education, was a member of the Varsity Cheerleaders and also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Morgan is a junior majoring in Social Welfare. She holds the position of president of the NAACP and is also a member of the Black Writers Club. Dent is a senior majoring in Elementary Education. She holds the title of Homecoming Queen for the year 1978- 79, and is active in the Black Student Union as Treasurer. A statement from Black relating to the exhibit said: "My related concern toward Black women is a result of my experiences and those with whom I have had the privilege of sharing the assets as well as the liabilities. I have had the experience of dealing with those who are considered famous as well as those who go unnoticed."She continued, "So often we pay tribute to only the famous but it is those women who often go unnoticed that raise our children as a minority. To them I would like to pay tribute for often they are only known as mothers or as those ladies. Black women, or minority parents. If our minority society is to go forward, it seems as though respect, honor, and tribute should go toward the fruit of their laborers as they have contributed much more than fine gold to our minority society." The display honored such noted singers as Billie Holiday and Marian Anderson. It recognized Wilma Roudolf and Alice Coachman for their outstanding track and field abilities. It brought to light some political figures such as Ethel Allen, city councilwoman at large, and Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, California's first Black Congress woman, elected in 1972. Nikki Giovanni, a noted poet, Shirly Chisolm, Corretta King and many more were noted in the display. The exhibit remained in the library throughout February. The brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi put together a very interesting and inspiring exhibit, making a worthwhile contribution to Black History Month</text>

<text>"I Care" week begins; Campus gets involved By LYNN BOCKIUS Quad Correspondent This week (October 24-28), is "I Care" week. This is the "beginning" of a new twoyear campaign to promote a commitment to human relations among students and faculty. The program was developed by WCSC's Human Relations Planning Committee to focus on the personal rights of individuals, and problems dealing with communication and understanding that are found on campus and in West Chester. "I Care" week will begin on Monday, October 24, with the distribution of "I Care" buttons and literature explaining the campaign.Tuesday, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., students, faculty, and members of the community will assemble on the Quad outside Main Hall for speeches and exhibits supporting the ideas behind "I Care" week. There will be music and several WCSC clubs will be selling a variety of food and beverages. In case of rain, the festivities will be held in the main lobby of SCUB. On Wednesday, faculty and staff from the North and South campuses will get the chance to become better acquainted. The faculty from South Campus is scheduling a full day of events and will ask their colleagues from North Campus to join in on an individual basis in order to promote warmth and friendship. The Social Welfare Club will hold a panel discussion on "Human Relations: The Unfilled Promise", Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in SCUB, Rm. 243. Guest speakers will discuss the lack of progress in human relations in the United States since the 1960's and will apply their thoughts to the situation at WCSC and in the surrounding community. Thursday night there will be a dance sponsored by several diverse campus groups in Philips Ballroom. Music for different types of dancing such as disco, rock, soul, and salsa will be featured. Two local disc jockeys, The "E" Man and Luis Perez will be present to add to the festivities. WCSC student ID is needed for admittance. On Friday night, key figures in West Chester and surrounding areas are invited to WCSC for dinner and an evening of socializing. This program is being held in the hopes that there will be more interaction between the college and its community in the future. To help remind the campus community of the meaning behind "I Care" week, a special exhibit will be on display in Francis Harvey Green Library from October 18 until November 20. "Black Women: Achievement Against the Odds", presenting over 150 black women's professional accomplishments, is on loan from the Smithsonian Institute. In the future events such as Black and Spanish Art Festivals, expanded ethnic academic programs and human relations seminars will attempt to establish a permanent "I Care" attitude on campus. When asked why he thinks "I Care" week will be effective, chairman Dr. John Main explained, "We want to use this week to make people aware that problems do exist and to break down barriers and try to get the different groups together to talk. There's been an element of denial of the problems on campus that exist. We want to help people get rid of the denial and do something about the problems. This week is a call to commitment; if people care, then they should do something about it." </text>

<text>The West Chester State football team is kicking off its 1974 season a little differently this year. It'll start with a pep rally. That's right, a good old fashioned pep rally (complete with cheerleaders, coaches, players, the works) to precede a good old fashioned winning football season. The festivities will begin on Friday 7:00 p.m. at Farrell Stadium and continue on Saturday with the Ram's home and season opener against the purple knights of Bridgeport University (1:30 p.m.) Head coach John Furlow, now in his third season as top man, is very optimistic about this year despite a disappointing 5-6 slate last season, including a four game losing streak that is still on the line. The Rams have 36 returning players who saw game action last year and are solidly two-deep at every position. Significant losses through graduation are running backs Merritt Kersey (now a free agent punter with Philadelphia Eagles), Fran Caserta, middle linebacker Bill Edger and defensive end Jack Sweeney. However, ample replacements have filled in nicely. A well-honed offense should be a definite plus in the Ram's game plan. "We'll score on everybody," quipped Furlow. The offensive line is quick and experienced. Co-captain and little allamerican candidate Bob Hartshorn is at tight end. Rob Beaument, Jack Simon and Rich Hall will return at offensive tackles. Steady Dominic Scamuffa and Bill Dervich will hold down offensive guard and Ed Hoffman starts at center. The fleet Dennis Wickwire will be at split end. Guy VanAlstine, Chip Zaweisky, and Tom Hogan will monopolize the halfback spots while Warren (Sudsie) Sothern and Herb Mills settle down into the fullback slot. Warren Mays will again be ' the number one quarterback with Chuck Menas eagerly waiting in the wings. There should be no problems putting points on the board. The task of keeping the opponents from doing any offensive frolicking will be up to a defensive line anchored by. Co-captain Mike Green who will start at tackle. Tom Hennessey holds down the other tackle position. At the ends will be Mel Hinton, who was recently scouted by the Dallas Cowboys, and Joe Bucelli. Mike Fitzpatrick, an outside linebacker last season, will fill the void left by Edger at middle linebacker, Rich Kirby should also see action in the middle. Paul Givler on the strong side and Gary Smith on the weak side round out the linebacking corps. The defensive backfield will feature rugged John Barr at right halfback, Kevin MacAneny at free safety, Pete DiFillipo at tight safety, and Ken Batdorf filling in for Dennis lanovale (knee problems) at left halfback. Strong legged Steve Cook will handle the punting and place kicking chores. "This team has real good overall speed," Furlow explained. "Our lineman and backs are very quick. We're not big. We're an average West Chester team as far as size, but the team speed is much better."Assisting Furlow this year will be Dick Yoder (offensive coordinator), Walt Buechele (defensive coordinator), Joe Lauletta (offensive line), John Bove (defensive line), and Vince Knoll (linebackers). Included in this year's power-packed schedule besides Bridgeport are Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Millersville, Bloomsburg, American International College (Mass.), Kutztown, Cheyney, and the University of Delaware. There may not be a single soft spot in the entire schedule, but when you start the year with a pep rally, how can you possibly lose. </text>

<text>The 1972 outdoor track season got under way on March 20 as the ' team held its first practice. The Rams should be strong candidates for the MAC Championship which the Rams lost last year after winning it the two previous years. The Rams are also defending State College champions, and are the favorite again this year. On the basis of an undefeated indoor season and team strength in most events, the outlook for the outdoor season is very good. The Rams open the season on April 7-8, at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Virginia, and climax the season with the MAC Championship at Rider College, New Jersey, on May 12, 13. Those that qualify will advance to the IC4A meet and the Nationals. Leading the Hams will be the three co-captains, Dan Lerch, Ken Lehman and Frank Costello. Lerch ran a 4:13.7 mile in Hollinger Field House for a new school record over the past season and should be a prime threat to the Farrell Stadium mark of 4:13.6 by Walt Hawkins of La Salle, and his own school mark of 4:11.5. Bill Showers and Bill Dawson should be strong also in the mile as will be Bob Burhannan and Bob Yiengst. West Chester record holder Ken Lehman (14.1) in the 120 high hurdles will attempt to erase the stadium mark of 14 flat by Temple's Jim F.I well. Lehman will also attempt to defend his Pennsylvania Conference title in the high and the intermediate hurdles. Al Coleman and Mel Hinton, freshmen, will add support in the high hurdles, and Bill Bixler in the intermediates. In the 880, Frank Costello is the leading Ram performer. Costello's best indoor time this past season was 1:54.tD, and puts him i very near the school record of Jim Shank's 1:53.1, and the stadium mark of 1:52.9 by Walt Hawkins of La Salle. Once again. Showers, Dawson and Burhannan will pressure the top Ram performer. Jim Agnew will lead the quarter-mile prospects as his indoor record time of :50.4 makes him a contender for school record honors. The school mark is held by George Smith of 48.7 in 1968, and the stadium mark is 49 flat by Temple's Doug Scott. Agnew holds the frosh record of 49 flat. Frank Vnuk will be the major competition for Agnew, along with Rev. Rhodes and Rich Barbara. In the sprints, there will be close competition among the Ram runners in trying to erase the school marks held by Bill Krouse of 9.4 in the 100 and 21.4 in the 220. Sam Reid, Bob Bair, Dave Boyle, and Ed Boldosser are the prime aspirants for such honors. The long distance races will feature freshman Chuck Marquette, who had the best indoor time of 9:24.1 in the two mile run, and Dave Patterson. Dan Lerch holds the stadium mark of 9:20.5. The field events will be headed by many veterans. Marty Pavelic with a best indoor throw of 49'11-1/4" will lead the shot put with Stu Musser right behind him at 48'10". Doug Ulson appears as the sole threat in the discus. Seniors Tom Reifsnyder (212') and Brad Flickinger (185') appear as the top javelin men. The pole vault will have record holders Joe Talley and Bob Roup as the top performers. The jumping events will have Jeff Hery as the top performer in the high jump on the basis of his 6'B" indoor best. Terry Wadsworth and Lynn Schaeffer should also place in most of the competition. Dave Mapes had the indoor best of 43'5" in the triple jump and will face tough competition from Bob Bair, Terry Wadsworth, and transfer Ken Thompson. The long jump will be headed by Bair, with Wadsworth, Mapes, and, Thompson</text>
