<text>Editorial: Campus and Community The racial problems here if they can be termed "racial" or "problems" in the full sense of the two words, might be partially alleviated in the near future by making social events and course studies more relevant to black students. In the past the term "racial problems" has been used for sake of no better term. When this term had been applied before, it usually referred to violence of racial origin. West Chester has experienced no racial violence be originating within the academic community itself. The Hackman stabbing and the Chambers Brothers bust (for lack of a better word) were both caused by "outside agitators." Even though these incidents are not real problems within the academic community, West Chester State College still has a responsibility to the West Chester community. At this point, the college is not yet a part of the community, which is a very tragic but true statement.Much»is being done within the college to upgrade the relations between the black and white campus factions, namely, endeavoring to make social events and course studies more relevant to the black student. Yet with all this emphasis on upgrading relations on the campus, what is actually being done to upgrade relations of the college with the town? Larry Doudy, who was Chairman of Black History Week, stated in a previous article, that the black college community is striving toward establishing tutorial programs in the town. He also commented that the Gospel Choir will be performing in the town on three occasions. The Director of College Union says that a forum program is in the making for the next academic year which will bring more black and minority group speakers onto the campus. Hopefully, some of these speakers will come from the West Chester community. But to what degree will these ideas prevent incidents like the Hackman stabbing and the Chambers Brothers disaster? The ideas presented by the two above are well taken and hopefully will improve relations with the community to some degree. But for the college community as a whole, black and white, administration and faculty, these ideas are short-sighted. What must really be done to prevent further incidents like these is to open up more social events which would depend on not only the participation of the college but also on equal participation of the community. Events like a basketball game between students and community residents would be worthwhile. Anything that would engage equal participation of both factions is a healthy idea. Until the college community as a whole "Looks over the fence" as Larry Doudy so aptly stated, and. stops ignoring the existence of a community, the college will suffer. If the college in all its idealistic grandeur fails to see this, we might as well close our books and admit to ignorance. N.J.H. </text>

<text>Equal" rights To the Editor: Open letter to Bill Holland: Before I start commenting on your "Reply to Milton," I would like to establish my position. I am totally against racism of any kind. I am irritated by the term "honky" as well as the term "nigger." I am a strong supporter of equal rights for blacks. When I say "equal" rights, I mean precisely that. At the risk of using a term that will probably be taken personally by some ultra-sensistive individuals, I would like to point out that there is a "certain group" which is racist in nature and is what I consider to be a threat to efforts for black equality. Unfortunately, this group consists mainly of blacks (no generalizations or racist implications intended). This is a group which discriminates against the whites and yells "white racism" when they don't get their own way. This is similar to a child's tantrum and can accurately be termed "puerile." These people are paranoids who are extremely self-conscious. When a group of five people who just happen to be black push me out of the way to get in line first in the dining hall, I am a white racist or a honky if I complain to them. If a group of people who just happen to be white do the same thing, then I am a normal person who doesn't like being pushed. Please forgive any accidental generalizations. My point is that there is a "certain group" which is creating friction because they are overly defensive and take everything personally. I would like to be able to sing "White Christmas" at Christmas time without having to worry about offending anyone. I know Mr. Collier both as a coach and as a past teacher of mine. I know him well enough to recognize the accusations in your reply to him as being "puerile". Apparently, you consider yourself a noble champion of the black cause. Well, Mr. Don Quixote, you can dismount from your high horse because you're not helping a thing. You know as well as anyone that Mr. Collier would have said the same things about whites who refuse to stand for the national anthem.Thank you for informing us, Mr. Holland, that by saluting the flag we are "bowing down to the white establishment." I'm sure most people didn't realize this. I don't know where you get these fantastic misconceptions from, but I can only guess that you represent that type of paranoid individual I mentioned earlier. You, Mr. Holland, are one of the biggest threats to black equality on this campus. I, however, will do more for you than you did for Mr. Collier by giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming that you don't realize the harm you're doing. Before you accuse me of white racism you might check with Bob Taylor, my fraternity brother who is truly a brother. You might also like to know that it was by my suggestion that Joe Bell, my former roommate, formed the first black fraternity on this campus. I don't care what color you are, Bill Holland, and I couldn't care less, but if you don't stop walking around with a chip on your shoulder, you won't help the black cause one bit. I believe, however, that someday there will be equality for blacks and whites in spite of people like you. Open your eyes, Mr. Holland. Look at the world and face it like a man - - not like a "boy." <text>New pres. outlines BSU purpose By DONNA SOSNOWSKI ".. .We have a cause, and that is to promote the black on the WCSC campus as members of the student body who are here to get an education, rather than isolated stereotypes who are here to fill a yearly quota.. With these words, Alice Hunt, corresponding secretary for the Black Student Union summed up the purpose behind West Chester BSU. Officially begun during the fall 70-71 academic year, BSU is an organization dedicated to the creation of a relevant atmosphere for black students at WCSC by broadening and enhancing their academic and social life. It is open to all West Chester students, faculty and staff who have a concern for the black cause. Under the guidance of Dr. Jody M. Harris, BSU held its second election in April. As a result of the election, Ruth (Kitty) Alexander was elected chairwoman, and Michael Johnson vice-chairman. Other elected officers were corresponding secretary Alice Hunt; Karen Pleasant, recording secretary, and Clinton Martin, treasurer. Recently, however, Cheryl Diane Harvey replaced Martin, who resigned for academic reasons. According to Alice, BSU is looking forward to a busy but successful year. First on the list of activities for this semester is a BSU dance, at which a King and Queen will be elected. BSU then hopes to enter that Queen in the homecoming queen competition during rampage weekend, since there are now enough blacks on campus to carry a vote. By the beginning of October, BSU will offer a work-study program to assist students in subjects they are weak in. This program, compiled by Kitty Alexander and Dr. Harris, will be held twice a week, one and a half hours each time. In November, a talent show, similar to the one the NAACP held last year for the benefit of Martin Luther King, is scheduled in Philips. This event will be emceed by a Philadelphia radio personality, and proceeds will go toward the BSU scholarship fund. BSU plans for this semester also include a Christmas formal, to be held in December at the Holiday Inn on Rt. 100 north of West Chester. Tickets will be available to everyone and will cost $16 per couple. Another BSU project is the biglittlebiglittle sister, big-little brother program. Initiated this summer to acquaint freshman with WCSC and to help solve their problems, this program is not affiliated with the Women's Resident Government program. Plans for the second semester, as outlined by Kitty and Alice, includes Black History Week, tentatively scheduled for sometime in February. Unlike last year's Black History Week, this year's is geared toward full student participation rather than concentrating on outside talent. During this time, BSU is sponsoring a Broadway musical "Purlie Victorious", the cast of which will consist entirely of students. For information regarding tryouts, contact Alice Hunt, ext. 2275. Planning is also in progress for the April Arts Festival. This festival, which emphasizes the cultural aspects- of black life through dances, concerts, and guest lectures, will continue for only one week this year. Alice Hunt noted that many of these programs were set up to satisfy blacks on this campus who were "shafted" into coming here. "Right now, the most important thing I'm concerned with is seeing that those black students who are here come back next year. So many leave because of poor guidance, educational problems, and disillusionment with the college." Presently, there are approximately 160 black residents. Commenting on the outlook for this year's programs, Kitty Alexander stated she is ... "very concerned about accomplishing these goals. So far I'm sure they will work. The students are anxious and concerned, meetings are very successful, and I'm getting good participation frott averyone. The Season looks bright.*"</text>

<text>Rossey voices disgust By JOHN P. ZAIMES A peaceful calm swept over the West Chester campus Thursday night; there were no marches, no fights, no riots, no trouble. There was only one meeting. Approximately 100 black students, with Black Student Union President Larry Dowdy as their spokesman, calmly entered Lawrence Center dining room at 8:30 p.m. to hear college President Paul W. Rossey, Dr. Edward N. Norris, president of the faculty senate, and Robert McLaughlin, student government president, voice their reactions to Wednesday's early morning cross burning on the field behind Sanderson Hall. Rossey stated his disgust with the "despicable and atrocious act" but stressed that it was executed "by only five or six persons, and should not be taken to represent the feelings of the more than 6,000 students" on this campus. "We are doing everything in our power to apprehend the people behind this cross burning. The state police are investigating to the fullest." Norris said he had received many calls from concerned faculty members asking what they could do to help. He offered to help in any way he or the faculty could. McLaughlin noted that the IGA had planned, at their general assembly meeting last week, to hold a special meeting last Sunday night to attempt to find solutions to ease the racial tensions on campus. He also said he would work "in any way we can" to help. When McLaughlin finished, Dowdy stated that "we have no further questions at this time." Fifteen.minutes after they came, the group rose together and left. Friday, Dowdy commented that the three leaders "reacted as expected."</text>
