Ad Hoc Committee files suit By TERRY COHEN The Ad Hoc Committee filed suit last week to obtain salary increments "which have always been attached to the signers of new contracts," according to Stephen Parker of the English Department. Parker is among various faculty members who have received terminal contracts and/ or been denied salary increments. Most of these are members of the Ad Hoc Committee. Besides Parker, Martin Watkins and Thomas Treadwell have been given terminal contracts for the 1970-71 academic year, and Dr. Frank Fox has not been given an increment. According to Parker, "This is the first time increments have not been given." He also said they were revoked in June, six months after the issuance of contracts.Dr. Filano, Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs, described the process by which a faculty member's salary increases. He There will be an important I student meeting TODAY at 10 I a.m. in PMA to organize the I West Chester segment of the I statewide March on Harris- I burg Bob Mclaughlin, Pres- I ident of IGA will speak at the I meeting about the objectives of I the march and its recent en- I dorsements by both the I administration and the Faculty I Senate. Organization and transport- I ation arrangements for the I Oct. 15 march are the major I reasons for the meeting. Stii- I dents and faculty who wish to I sign up for buses to the march I may do so in Mrs. Mackey's I office (IGA offices. Recitation I Hall). Those able to provide I extra transportation to the I march are asked to sign up as I well. said that the faculty manual contains an evaluation form, the same one which was in use during the 1969-70 academic year. An evaluation committee within the faculty member's department evaluates him, but his department chairman makes recommendations on the form as to whether the faculty member should receive tenure, be placed on probation, etc. It should be noted that recommendations are NOT final decisions. The contract and increment cases are now being heard by an appeals board, for which provision is made in the faculty manual. Members of the appeals board are Dr. John Turner of the History Department, Roy Sweet of the Music Department, Robert Rimel of the English Department, Miss Charlotte Good of the Education Department, and Dean Filano. The faculty manual states that appeals boards are to be staffed by two members of the faculty senate, one member of the general faculty, one department chairman, and the Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs. With the exception of the Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs, all other members are elected. According to some members of the Ad Hoc Committee, the AAUP has "pleaded with (Dean Filano) in the interest of fairness"-to resign from the appeals board. Dean Filano said at first, "That is not true," but then said that he had best not comment on that issue because he thought that it might "prejudice the hearings." Members of the Ad Hoc Committee involved do not seem to know the reasons for the action taken against them. "They haven't given us anything, absolutely nothing," said Treadwell. Said Dr. Filano, "They are given reasons, either oral or in writing." Dr. Filano added that Ad Hoc members are not the only faculty members who have been given terminal contracts, but he refused to disclose who received them, or how many were given out.
