What's Wrong With The Rams? by Bill Harvey Question: What's wrong with the Rams? The Rams, to the surprise of many people, have lost their first two football games. The team has not lived up to preseason expectations. The fact is, it has not even come close to achieving their full potential. The ,big question is "Why?" It's a very difficult question to answer. A look at the Rams' two previous games may help to provide an answer. In the opener against East Carolina College, the Rams expected a tough fight. Few people, however, anticipated a 33- 7 loss. Against the Pirates, West Chester achieved a total of 14 first downs, 148 yards passing, 101 yards rushing, and 7 points scored. They punted six times, and had one pass intercepted. East Carolina's statistics show 15 first downs, 201 yards passing, 132 yards rushing and 33 points scored. The Pirates had two passes intercepted, and punted three times. According to statistics, the Rams were outplayed, tout not nearly enough to merit a 26 point deficit. It would seem that the defense wasn't adequately prepared for such a tough foe in the opening game. The pass defense allowed 201 yards. The offense just couldn't seem to get moving. The Stroudsburg game shows little difference. West Chester compiled 82 yards rushing, 110 yards passing, and a total of 13 first downs. The Rams punted 5 times and had 4 passes intercepted.East Stroudsburg accumulated 299 yards on the ground at 15 yards via the air. The Warriors punted 6 times, and had one pass intercepted. The final score was 13-0, with Stroudsburg holding the victory margin. In the second game the offense just couldn't come up with the big play when it was necessary. The rushing defense gave up 299 yards. The opening loss to East Carolina may have drained the spirit from the team, and resulted in last week's upset by Stroudsburg. Then too, all the state colleges "gun" for West Chester. A team that is "up" for a game is a hard team to beat. All of this plus the problem of injuries and a tough schedule makes it rough on the Rams. This is not to say that the Rams will not have a successful season. You can be assured that Coach Bonder and all the team members will give their utmost every time they take the field. Neither is it an excuse for the two previous losses that the Rams have suffered. The team has lost two games, it is true, but, they still have six more to play, and they will play all six to tre best of their ability. But, even if they should lose all six, we should be proud of the team and of the school it represents. It is a lot harder to be a good loser than it is to be a good winner.
