Present flaws pinpointed By MATHEW CUSTER The black students who protested against their treatment at West Chester State were right in many ways. There are glaringly few Negroes on this campus; a fact like this would make anyone fear that he was a member of the proverbial "minority group." The black students were right when they pointed out the deficiency of African culture courses in the Social Studies Curriculum. These courses are needed at any institution of higher learning, and are almost absent at many of them. Dean Fletcher himself admitted that the West Chester State graduate does not have the qualifications, or the courses readily available, that would facilitate his teaching in a crowded urban environment. The action taken by the black students has made it obvious that progress is necessary in the academic fields. But the black activists were most accurate when they requested more publicity for West Chester as a favorable place for the black high school senior to consider for his college education. (Continued on page 5)

Basically, this lack of proper public relations is the cause for the minority of Negroes on campus now. In effect, it is not the admissions office which is being discriminatory; this would obviously be against the law. It is THE black student who applies to another college, because he knows there will be more Negroes there, who is being discriminatory. It is the great volume of Negroes who prefer to apply to Temple or Cheyney who are discriminating against West Chester. The minority is, therefore self-perpetuating. West Chester needs help in instituting more and better programs in Negro culture, Urban Problems, and Teaching in the Urban Ghetto. West Chester also needs better public relations with the urban Negro populace. In short West Chester needs more Negroes.
